WEEK ENDING IN 12/10/2021
Dear OSES Families,
We hope everyone had a wonderful week here at OSES
Students have been learning about all the different holidays many cultures celebrate around this time. Please communicate with your child’s teacher to find out about any activities going on in class this coming week.
Only one more week until Winter Break, but the learning doesn’t stop yet. Report cards and iready reports will be going home with students next week so be sure to look out for those.
Good luck to all students participating in the Math Competition this week, we know that they will make OSES proud!
If your student wears a mask to school, don’t forget to send them with extra!
Remember when picking up your student in the car line, a photo or paper copy of your car rider number is needed.
Have a fantastic weekend and we will see you back here on Monday!

Mr. Mateer’s class is exploring equivalent fractions this week as we get ready for our fractions test next week. Students are able to generate equivalent fractions, and even compare and order fractions from least to greatest. In science, we took a test on heat transfer, and I’m sure the scores will be hot hot hot!
For coding week, 4th grade students demonstrated their knowledge of heat transfer (our current topic in Science Class) by completing a short coding project. The students used coding blocks and sounds in the projects, then uploaded screenshots of their creations to a Wakelet. They really enjoyed this activity and are looking forward to using coding in future learning lessons.

In Mr. Rego’s World History class, we reviewed India by playing a round of Jeopardy, as well as we learned about how the Aryan migration transformed life and culture in India. Last, but not least, we started learning about the Mauryan and Gupta empires of India. Our next unit will be on our final river-valley civilization, China. Remember to make up any missing Study Island assignments, as well as turn in any missing work before Wednesday of next week. Report cards will be going home with students next Friday, December 17.

CONTEST AND CHALLENGES
MU ALPHA THETA MATH COMPETITON
The Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society of Orlando Science High School invites all 4th and 5th grade Central Florida students to compete at the Central Florida Math Tournament (CFMT), which is to be held on December 11th, 2021.
Registration is now open. If you would like to register your student for this year's Invitational, visit the registration page and fill out the online form with your student's information.
Registration must be completed online by the end of December 7th, 2021. The registration fee is $25 for each student and should be paid online via School Pay. The competition is open to first 60 students from 4th grade and first 60 students from 5th grade.
The competition will take place at Orlando Science Elementary School campus which is located at 2601 Technology Drive, Orlando FL 32804.
We encourage all schools to participate, regardless of whether they currently have math teams or not. In Competition Math, any topics can and do arise. There are no guidelines or hints about how to solve the problems, so it truly is an opportunity to express and develop individual creativity and problem-solving skills. However, in order to prepare your students, you may look at the past years’ questions.
We hope you will find this competition a rewarding mathematical experience for your students, and we look forward to your participation at our Invitational on December 11th.
