From Principal Dr. Barnette
Happy December!!
We are so excited to share that our ASB/Leadership students are planning a Winter Wonderland Dance for Wednesday, December 21 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM!! It’s going to be so much fun!! While it’s called a “dance,” in reality it’s more like a festival that includes a DJ. Middle school kids who venture on the dance floor tend to jump up and down more than they dance, but it’s all good! The DJ we’ve hired is very experienced with middle school dances and intersperses interactive activities like the limbo, conga line, and line dancing. We’ll also have refreshments, a photo booth, a gaga pit, giant bowling, and more. Tickets will be sold for $10 beginning next week (or $15 at the door). Please review these dance expectations so everyone can have a fun and safe evening.
There are 9 more academic days until this grading period ends. Please encourage your student to access the many opportunities for additional help if they are trying to get their grades up. Teachers are available during Cougar Academic Time (also known as CAT) during the school day and we have an extensive after-school tutoring program including virtual evening support.
If you are thinking about recognizing your student’s teachers for the holidays and wonder what they would like, we’re going to help you out. We’re compiling wish lists right now and will share them with you soon. Of course, there is no expectation that you purchase anything, but some of you have asked.
With gratitude,
Dr. Celeste Barnette

Counseling Department...Helping Diegueño Students/Families
As the holidays approach for some of our students this may be an especially difficult time of year for many reasons. This may be the first holiday since the death of a parent or a parent may be absent from the home. Given the state of the economy, parents may be out of work and so this will be a very different holiday for many students. In some instances, families don't conform to what society says should be happening at this time of year, which can often be a source of great sadness for our kids. The counseling department is aware of some students and families who may be in need this year, and we would like to provide some sort of happiness for the holidays. We are hoping to collect a variety of gift cards for our families, so that they may be able to have a wonderful meal or provide a special gift for their kids. We are asking for gift cards to Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Grocery Stores. We are hoping to provide a gift basket with the cards for approximately 10 families. Any amount would be greatly appreciated by our families during these tough times.
Please turn in any gift cards to the counseling office no later than December 21.
As always, the counseling office appreciates your support.

Attendance Corner
- Call or email 24-48 in advance for an “Off-Campus” pass, if picking up students early for appointments. Students will need to pick up a pass before school on the day of their appointment.
- For the safety of our students, a Parent or Guardian will need to sign out a student through attendance in the administration building. Students cannot walk or ride their bikes/e-bikes home.
- To minimize class disruption please be aware drop-off items such as Chromebooks, PE clothes, homework, lunches, etc., will not be delivered to class. In the morning announcements, students are told to ONLY come to check the Forgotten Items Cart during the break, CAT and lunch. The office is NOT responsible for items not picked up by students.
- Please do not bring outside food to students. ALL students are able to get free lunch at our Cougar Cafe.
Thank you for your cooperation
