Alaska's Winter Chill (Flowers).
“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun” (Krakauer 57).
Chris would have appreciated the image above. Chris was very adventurous and loved the wilderness. He believed in traveling the world and escaping the damaged society of America. Chris would have included this image into his journal because of the beauty of nature and solitude captured in the picture. It is possible Chris would have seen this horizon with his own eyes during his adventure, so it is important to include it into his personal journal.
Alaska Fishing Salmon (Tankard).
"He sought out experienced hunters around town and asked them for tips about stalking game, dressing animals, and curing meat"( Krakauer 67).
Chris was interested in learning ways to obtain food and keep it eatable. If Chris had access to the internet, he would have learned useful tips from this video. This video explains how to make a spear and explains the best technique for catching the salmon. Once the salmon is caught, it can be eaten straight out of the river. Chris would have benefited from this knowledge of fishing because the fish would become a major food source for him in his journey. He would have appreciated the way no extra tools were needed and all items used came from the wilderness.
I'm Happy (Dickens).
"I'm living like this by choice"(Krakauer 51).
Chris had a college education and was intelligent. Many people tried to discourage him in his attempt to leave his desirable life and to go exploring in the Alaskan wilderness. Many people thought he was crazy for traveling north and found it pointless to waste such a promising life of success behind him. However, Chris wasn't happy with society and dreamed of living in the wilderness. This comic is very basic, but explains Chris's beliefs towards his life and dreams. He didn't care what others thought about his life long goal of traveling to Alaska. Chris would have kept this comic in his journal as a daily reminder that he was truly happy and he didn't need to focus on others' opinions.
Wounded Warrior’s Perseverance Inspires Chicago Crowd (Chambers).
"It is simply waiting out there for you to grasp it, and all you have to do is reach for it"(Krakauer 58).
Chris would have enjoyed to hear Melissa Stockwell story because of her perseverance and outlook on life after her traumatic event in Iraq. Stockwell lost her leg in Iraq when a bomb exploded next to her HUMVEE. She didn’t let the loss of her leg slow her down. She entered the Paralympics and was able to support America. She continues to help others who have experienced amputations and she shares her story to motivate others to never give up. Chris believed in achieving set goals and Stockwell was able to do just that. Chris would have keep this article close by to encourage him to reach his goal of surviving in the Alaskan wilderness.
Wise Words Wednesday (Lani).
"We talked for hours about books; there aren't that many people in Carthage who like to talk about books. He went on and on about Mark Twain"(Krakauer 67).
Mrs. Westerberg talked to Chris for many hours and as quoted above he continually spoke of Mark Twain. Chris agreed with many of Twain's ideas and beliefs, so he enjoyed many of Twain's publications. In this particular quote, Twain is encouraging people to travel the world because it ultimately helps a person become less judgmental and less narrow-minded. Chris strongly believed in a adventurous life full open-minded people. Therefore, Chris would have kept this quote in his journal as a reminder to be kind and travel.
