2015 My Favorite Books
As the year comes to a close, I thought I would share with you a few of my favorite reads of 2015. Happy New Year and wishing you a new year filled with great books.
A Few of Mrs. Sawyer's Favorite Children's Books of 2015
A Fish in a Tree by Lynda Murphy
An inspiring story of a 6th grade student who suffers from dyslexia and has gone undiagnosed for years. She feels dumb and is bullied until a new teacher arrives to show her how smart she is and how she has a bright future ahead for herself.
Confessions of an Imaginary Friend by Michelle Cuevas
A charming story about an imaginary friend who discovers he is imaginary and embarks on a journey to find love and acceptance. This is a really sweet story that would make a wonderful family read-aloud.
The Nest by Kenneth Oppel
Steve's family is going through a difficult time. His newborn brother is facing major surgery and his parents are distracted. For some kids summer is a sun-soaked season of fun. But for Steve, it’s just another season of worries. Worries about his sick newborn baby brother who is fighting to survive, worries about his parents who are struggling to cope, even worries about the wasp’s nest looming ominously from the eaves. So when a mysterious wasp queen invades his dreams, offering to “fix” the baby, Steve thinks his prayers have been answered. This book is not for the faint of heart and is ideal for fans of Neil Gaiman's Coraline. This is a great psychological thriller for kids.
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
Astrid and Nicole have been best friends for years and have done everything together until this summer when they realize they have grown apart and Astrid has to chisel out an identity for herself. I think every girl should read this graphic novel before they go into middle school. It is a very accurate portrayal of what happens to friendships during the middle school years.
I Will Take a Nap by Mo Willems
Elephant and Piggie tackle the tough topic of nap time in a typically hilarious way. Mo Willems is a genius!
Masterminds by Gordon Korman
Gordon Korman has taken his writing into a different direction. He has created a page turning mystery. Eli and his friends live in the idyllic Serenity Springs where everything is perfect. The population is very small. When Eli and his friend accidentally happen upon something on the outskirts of town and cross the town's borders to go see it, Eli gets terribly ill. This incident unleashes a mystery as Eli realizes that all the adults in town, including Eli's father, have been lying to them. Eli and his friends must try to solve the mystery as their lives depend upon it. This is the first book in a planned series and the book definitely leaves the readers clamoring for the next installment.
Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews
What a great book to share with middle grade students to introduce them to a young man who overcomes adversity and succeeds in meeting his dream of being a jazz musician.
The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Set during World War II, young Ada has never left her mother's apartment. Born with a damaged foot, her mother shuns her and treats her as a servant. When Ada hears that children are being evacuated from London for the countryside, she decides to run away to escape her mother and save her young brother from the war. Will she find happiness in her new life and permanently escape her wicked mother and find happiness?
We Forgot Brock by Carter Goodrich
Phillip and Brock are best friends. Everyone can see Phillip, but only Phillip can see Brock. A night at the Big Fair is all fun and games until Phillip gets sleepy, heads home, and forgets Brock! Will they be reunited?
