A Message from Principal Callaghan
Dear WHS School Community:
The year seems like it’s off to a pretty smooth start. Of particular note, the relationships being formed between teachers and students have been happening quickly and thoughtfully. In keeping with our school year theme of “Why We Share”, students and staff are sharing talents and gifts surrounding learning that is opening doors of opportunities and possibilities. Developing solid connections with students is the real difference-maker: they can show students how passionate teachers are about their job and content area; and, it strengthens the opportunities for students to grow, develop, and learn in meaningful ways– acquiring knowledge and improving critical thinking skills.
Building relationships between teachers and students, and additionally with the content and skills to be learned provides added value to the educational experience.
Let us all support every child to engage in the learning process, and to communicate early on with their teachers if there are any questions or concerns that arise. Two-way communication is critical to ensure the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose. To this end, please take the time to review the WHS school community’s beliefs and protocol around effective communication:
(From WHS Handbook) Protocol for Addressing a Question, Concern or Complaint
There may be a time when a student or parent feels that they have been treated unfairly or disrespectfully. Whenever you need to address a concern, please communicate it immediately to the person involved.
If the concern is about anything to do with a particular class, please contact the teacher directly via email or leave a voicemail message. You can expect a timely response from the individual involved.
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the outcome, then contact the appropriate Department Chair.
If the matter remains unresolved, the next step would be to call your Assistant Principal.
If there is still no resolution of the problem, then direct the matter to our Principal.
When there is a concern about athletics, a conversation with the coach is the first step, the athletic director is the second, and when necessary, an Assistant Principal and our Principal.
Thanks again for your cooperation and support. Enjoy this season of autumn.
Best,
Brian Callaghan
Principal
