Keefe Regional Technical School
September 1, 2022
Welcome from Superintendent Evans:
To All Members of the Keefe Tech Community,
I am pleased to report that our school year is off to a wonderful start. We were thrilled to welcome a full grade 9 class and well over 800 students. We are well underway with our academic programs, career & technical programs, student activities and athletics.
There is still time for students to get involved if they have interest. We are also very excited to start the fall semester of our Keefe at Night continuing education program for adults.
To our current families, I encourage you to please remain in contact with us about your student’s progress, as well as any ideas, questions or concerns that we can address. I also encourage you to share your Keefe experience with members of your community and other prospective students so they are aware of the exceptional opportunities we have for the students we serve.
I wish you all a wonderful fall season.
Sincerely,
Jon Evans
Welcome Back Message from Dr. Snow
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope that you had an enjoyable summer break! On behalf of the administration, faculty and staff, I would like to welcome back both our new and returning students and families.
During Grade 9 Step-Up Day, I had the opportunity to meet the new grade 9 students and officially welcome the Class of 2026. It is always exciting to meet a new group of students. I encouraged the new students to take the transition to high school as an opportunity to plan for their future and create a successful path towards graduation, higher education and employment.
For all students, the beginning of a new year is an opportunity to take advantage of new opportunities. I encourage students to join a club, a sports team and to use the after school program to get assistance in their classes. It is our goal to provide endless opportunities for success in high school at Keefe Tech.
I want to remind all students and families that they are part of the Keefe Tech community. Please feel free to contact us if you have a question, suggestion, or if we can be of any assistance. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the coming months.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shannon Snow
Principal

School Counseling
Welcome back KT students! A reminder to all students that the add/drop deadline to modify your schedule is Friday, September 30th! Guidance will be unable to accommodate schedule changes after this date. Thank you!
Juniors! Save the Date for the PSAT on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 - More information to follow from your counselors about signing up.
Seniors who are planning to apply to 4-year colleges and universities should be working on their college applications, completing necessary essays and making sure they have connected with teachers about recommendations. Students should make an appointment with their School Counselor if they have not done so already. Deadlines come up quick and we want to make sure they everyone is on track.

Mental Health Support for Families:
Summer always seems to go by so fast and there never seems to be enough time to mentally prepare for going back to school. Yet late summer is such a huge transition time for everyone at home to get used to a more structured schedule and demands made on getting homework done, going to sports practice, and so on. In this issue, I offer some tips on how to transition to back to school, as well as some useful information about sleep and social media use,
A google search of how others ease back into the school year, here are the most commonly found tips :
1. Get some sleep: Teenagers need to adjust to getting to bed early again. It may be a good idea to skip naps after school so that when 9 p.m. comes around your child will be ready to go to sleep. As we all know, sleep is critical for teen mental health. It may also be a wise - albeit unpopular decision - to take the phone away at night. I attached more information on useful pointers for parents.
2. Make time for breakfast : During the summer when students sleep late their "breakfast" may be midday, or just skipped entirely. However, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It will give students the physical and mental energy needed to sit through over six hours of class.
3. Discuss social media : Throughout the course of the school year, students will often experience negative experiences with social media. Our school climate office and school counselors spend a lot of time helping students navigate painful situations that boil down to miscommunication or not being very sensitive to others on social media. The beginning of the school year may be a good time to sit down and discuss the pros and cons of social media and helps kids use it responsibly. I also attached some pointers in this issue.
4. Get organized : Organization is one of the most important skills that high school will ask of your child. We often suggest that students get a wall calendar or personal planner. They receive a free student handbook each year that has a calendar in it. Students can mark down the dates of midterms, finals, and assignments. .
5. Ask for help: We talk a lot about self advocacy, especially for freshmen, and to learn how to ask for what you need if you need help. This is a learned skill, and especially at the start of a new year it's a good time to start practicing. It's also about moving away from the shame if you don't immediately understand a direction - very few do! - and to know that teachers are happy to answer a good question.
Wishing you all a good start to 2022-2023 !
