The Benefits of Stretching
Stretching is not just beneficial for children—it’s necessary! Skipping stretching before or after exercise runs the risk of injuries and delayed recovery. A few minutes spent stretching both before and after exercising has numerous benefits including:
- Gets their blood pumping. By having your child spend a few minutes stretching and warming up before exercising, their muscles will have less tension and they’ll be ready to get out there and play.
- Reduces the risk of injury: If your child doesn’t stretch prior to exercising, they run the risk of sustaining an injury. When kids go directly into exercising without warming up, they could easily pull a muscle. Similarly, if children don’t properly cool down post-exercise, their muscles won’t recover as quickly and could sustain an injury.
- Increases flexibility and range of motion. Stretching can greatly increase your child’s flexibility and range of motion.
Let your child teach YOU! Let your child take a turn as teacher by showing you any of the following stretches they have been taught in P.E.:
- Jumping Jacks
- Elbow Stretch (Both Left and Right – 10 count)
- Arms Forward (10 count)
- Arms Backward (10 count)
- Spread Legs Stretch (Reach the middle of the floor – 10 count)
- Right Leg, Right Elbow Stretch (10 count)
- Left Leg, Left Elbow Stretch (10 count)
- Feet Together/Touch Toes Stretch (10 count)
- Hold Right Leg/Foot with Knee Down Stretch (10 count)
- Hold Left Leg/Foot with Knee Down Stretch (10 count)
