Genoa Competition Cheer Teams Huge Successes
Congratulations to the Varsity competition cheer team who took first place, against something very tough competition, at the Kids World New Years Classic on Saturday, January 11th. The team beat both Lake and Bowling Green high schools to come out on top at the event.
The team then competed at the University of Toledo on Sunday, January 12th, where they were one of only five division three teams in the state to qualify to compete in the BEST IN THE STATE finals at Dennison University on January 26th!
Congratulations, Cheerleaders!!
Genoa Wrestlers Hang on to Beat Rossford
It all came down to sophomore Nate Partin with the Comets trailing 35-36 in the final bout Wednesday night against Rossford. With ice in his veins, Partin wasted no time as he swiftly took his opponent down and bundled him up for a pin to seal the Comet victory while under the lights on senior night in the Impact Zone. Genoa hung on to win 41-36. Also winning their bouts for the comets were Randy Matheny, Jessie Sanchez, Corey Welsh, Darin Muir, Dustin Morgillo and Kevin Contos. The Comets will be in action Friday and Saturday at the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. Go Comets!
Indoor Track & Field Opens Season at NW District Meet
The Indoor Track & Field team opened its season this past weekend at the NW District meet at the University of Findlay. The men’s team finished in fifth place in Division 2, while the women took ninth. Placing for the guys was Ethan Wilson (1st - HJ, 1st - TJ, 6th - LJ), the 4x200m relay team (5th - Hoeft, Wilson, Materni, Beach), and the 4x400m relay team (7th - Hoeft, Wilson, Rightnowar, Beach). Ethan Wilson set new indoor school records in the triple jump (37’-11”) and long jump (18’-7”), while Sam Beach became the first male pole vaulter to compete on the indoor team.
On the women’s side, the 4x200m relay was run for the first time as part of the indoor team, placing 6th. Taylor Simmons placed 2nd in the triple jump, while Lacy Frias placed 7th in the 400m and 8th in the 200m, setting new indoor team records for both.
Members of the indoor team also had the chance to try out the brand new track & field jerseys! Uniforms have been generously provided by our Genoa Athletic Boosters.

Catching Up With Comets ~ Stacy Rutledge
This is a section where we would like to showcase and highlight the wonderful things Genoa graduates are doing in their selective career fields. The college and career ready component is something that Genoa high school is striving to focus on as we prepare students for a future. We hope that these thoughts and highlights shared will help spread some wisdom obtained by Genoa high school past graduates. This week, we will spotlight, Stacy Rutledge a 1989 graduate of Genoa high school.
What was one good memory from high school that students today may enjoy hearing from your high school days?
I loved my history class. The teacher was great and made it interesting & my classmates were fun and into the subject as much as I was.
After high school what path led you to where you are today? (After HS until Today)
I have gone down many different paths over the years, lol. This is where I am right now in my life, not necessarily where I will end up for the rest of my life.
What are your plans for the future?
No definite plans. Get my kids all settled, with college degrees and working. Then maybe think about that.
What would be one word of advice that you have for high school students now at Genoa?
Get the best grades you can, go as far as you can in school, don't give up and say you'll go back and do it later. It's harder to go back than you think. Do it now, do college straight after high school. It's easier that way. Do your best now, it will make the rest of your life easier and better when it really matters.
