Hello GCES families!
Our spring parent-teacher conferences are quickly approaching and will be held on February 14-15. This is an important opportunity for every family to connect with our school and learn about their children’s progress thus far. This semester, we are inviting students to help lead the conferences in order to share their learning and experiences at school. During this time, expect your student, with support from their teacher, to share with you:
Their progress on and goals reading and math assessments
Recent classroom assignments and activities
A behavioral self assessment
A student-created report from their specials classes
Here are a few tips for families to help you prepare for this important time together.
During the conference:
Be on time (or early) for the meeting.
End the meeting on time. Other parents will probably have a conference after yours.
Relax and be yourself.
Stay calm during the conference.
If your child receives special services or ELD classes, ask about your child's progress in those classes too.
Ask for explanations of anything you don't understand.
Ask your child's teacher for ways that you can help your child at home.
Thank the teacher.
After the conference:
Visit the gym to connect with our Family and Community Engagement Coordinators and teachers of other classes like Art, Music, PE, Library, Technology and Spanish.
Talk about the conference with your child.
Talk about the positive points, and be direct about problems.
Tell your child about any goals and plans that were discussed.
Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year.
Mark your calendars for February 14-15, and you should have already received communication from your students’ teachers soon to schedule your session on Sign Up Genius. We can’t wait to see you all then!

English Language Development
We are so proud of all of our English learners here at GCES! They are all working so hard to show how much English they know on our annual ACCESS test. Even though it's hard work, there are many benefits to knowing more than one language. Here are a few of those benefits:
1) Learning a new language is kind of like a workout for your brain. It helps build neural pathways.
2) Multilingual people often excel in their native language even as they are learning a new one.
3) Knowing more than one language makes a person more marketable when they become adults and are looking for a job or career.
4) People who know more than one language tend to have better problem solving skills.
Thank you for always encouraging your students to do their best even when learning English is a challenge! You are helping to set them up for great success in the future!

From the Nurses' Office
Hello GCES families,
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Cavities, also known as caries or tooth decay, are the most common chronic disease of childhood according to the CDC. Children with poor dental health miss more school related to pain and doctors’ appointments which negatively affect grades and social experiences. Untreated cavities can cause infection and lead to problems eating, speaking, and learning. The good news is that dental disease in children is preventable!
Tips:
1. Brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
2. Limit drinks and food with added sugars. Encourage water, fruits, vegetables, or cheese for snacks.
3. Schedule a dental cleaning for your child every 6 months
Let the nurses know if your student needs a toothbrush or toothpaste, we have supplies!
