JBER Power Outage

A power outage on JBER is scheduled for this Friday beginning at 9:30am. This outage could last 5 hours, or the power outages could be intermittent. This will have a significant impact on many of our students' ability to log on. Teachers and staff are aware of this issue.

Postponement of In-Person Learning

The Anchorage School District has announced the delay of bringing elementary and special needs students back to in-school learning. The superintendent has indicated she will announce any further altercations to school opening dates on the 15th of this month. She has also committed to give community updates on the 1st and 15th date of each month moving forward. Please feel free to call the Gruening office at 742-3600 if you have further questions regarding school openings.

Second Quarter Classes

We have almost completed second quarter schedules for GMS students. All students are scheduled into one elective class. General parameters for core classes are that any student who took math and social studies first quarter will take science and language arts second quarter; any student who took science and language arts first quarter will take math and social studies second quarter. Remember that even though these classes last only one quarter, with our block schedule this year, a semester’s worth of content will be covered in one quarter.

Please feel free to email your student’s counselor if you have any questions: Dr. Pat Sloan at Sloan_Pat@asdk12.org for 7th grade or Tirzah Fullmer at fullmer_tirzah@asdk12.org for 8th grade students.

Changes to or From Virtual School

Now is the time to reach out to your student’s counselor if you would like to switch out of or into the ASD Virtual Program for second quarter. Virtual classes are conducted at the student’s pace and grade level without live instruction. There are learning modules that a student completes, and an ASD teacher monitors the student’s progress, not necessarily a Gruening teacher.

Students in the Gruening Blended Model (i.e., ASD in School) are receiving live instruction via Zoom right now and will have the opportunity to return to Gruening when we are allowed to open the school. Assignments will continue to be assigned and collected via Canvas so that if a student is absent he or she can keep current in the class.

Conferences this Fall Will be a Virtual Back-to-School Event

For this fall, we will be holding parent conferences via Zoom on October 22nd. Teachers will have their regular classes during the day and hosting a Zoom Open House in the evening for parents. The Zoom meeting link will be the same that students use to join their normal second quarter classes. Additional information will be forthcoming.
