*Educators working to support struggling students are likely to find the strategies and examples in this K-3 Routine to be beneficial to their work in the K-3 range and beyond.
About the Presentation:
This one-day workshop experience will provide an overview of comprehension strategies and activities for grades K-3 that emphasize the integration of listening, reading, and writing as students develop their ability to think about, organize, and communicate their understanding of what has been “read, said, or done”. These strategies can be used not only during reading instruction or your literacy block, but also throughout the entire school day to support any and all content area instruction (Math, Science, etc). Participants are encouraged to bring samples of texts they would use for instruction as a resource for activities they will complete throughout the day.
During this one day overview we will focus on the topics of:
- Oral language: using oral language and a rich language environment to develop, improve and expand speaking, listening, and discussion skills.
- Categorizing and main idea skills: expanding basic categorizing into main idea skills, using 3 techniques to help students identify main topics, main ideas, and key details, based on what has been “read, said, or done”.
- Top-down topic webs and Two Column Notes: using flexible, foundational graphic organizers to organize verbal or written information.
- Retell to summary: how to support students with transitioning from retell, to recount, toward summary as they move through grades K-3.
- Question generation: beginning with an understanding and use of basic question terminology, our goal is that as students move up they will also learn, through an introduction to Bloom’s Taxonomy, that thinking can occur at different levels from easy to more complex and will be supported in the task of generating questions.
Outcomes:
As a result of attending, participants will:
Develop an understanding of the strategies and activities that can be combined to support Primary level students with comprehension of language and text.
Generate a plan for using the components of this Routine to support instruction.
Apply these strategies and techniques when working with other (their own) materials and content.
