BMHS Weekly Update
March 2, 2020
Department Highlight: Health and Physical Education
BMHS HPE Staff: Mr. Eckert, Mr. Fleming, Ms. Hunter, Mr. Nigro, Mrs. Ritchie, Mrs. Will
Health classes have had several speakers come in throughout the year. Recently, our students had the opportunity to gain valuable information from the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Life Act, Allison Rose Foundation and Operation Keepsake. All of these organizations reinforce the units and lessons the students are being taught throughout the course. We continue our partnership with the Baldwin Wallace University Nursing Program in order to deliver a hands on basic CPR workshop for each of our Health students.
Physical Education (9th Grade Class) is an awesome opportunity for our students to learn about basic nutrition and healthy choices while developing a foundation in fitness. These students learn how to zone train with a state-of-the-art MyZone heart rate monitor system, which helps them to develop great fitness habits and an understanding in different ways to train.
Team Sports and Basketball courses continue to be popular choices among our students. They continue to enjoy the benefits of physical fitness and competitions on a regular basis in these courses.
Fitness & Stress continues to grow each year. More and more students and athletes enjoy learning valuable techniques and strategies to help cope and relieve stress in their daily lives while also learning many fitness skills and concepts to use in living a healthier lifestyle.
Cycling is in full swing with their training. Students participate in both teacher lead and student lead workouts on a daily basis. Students are tracking their fitness and training with the MyZone heart rate monitor system and are working toward achievable goals set at the beginning of the semester.
Advanced Weight Training is continuing to train out of the Roehm Athletic Complex. Students are using state of the art equipment daily as they work on developing their strength and athleticism while using technology. Custom workouts are sent to each student daily through an online fitness program. Coaches and Student Athletes are able to track their progress throughout their career as a Titan.

Celebrating Success at BMHS
NHS Hosts Leadership Forum
On Friday, February 28, 2020 the Berea Midpark High School hosted the Inaugural National Honor Society Leadership Forum. The National Honor Society of Berea Midpark High School invited the National Honor Societies of Strongsville High School, Olmsted Falls High School, and Brunswick High School to the event. The cafeteria was filled with over 200 National Honor Society members and the evening proved to be fun, insightful, and hopefully the start of a nice tradition. The evening started with the collection of clothing to be donated to Audrey’s Outreach in Brook Park, Ohio. It was estimated that over 2,000 clothing items were generated by the four schools! The evening consisted of food, board games, ping pong, and card making for local nursing homes. Four guest speakers were invited to serve on a panel to promote a question and answer like format. The four speakers were Jane Darrow, Rick Mack, Gary Crow, and Mark Smithberger and each guest provided a great amount of advice, life experience, and knowledge for the attending members.
Titan Athletes Have Highly Successful Weekend
This weekend proved to be full of tremendous accomplishments for our Titans wrestling and gymnastics programs.
The Titans crowned five champions and won its first OHSAA Sectional wrestling team title in school history at Strongsville High School Saturday afternoon.
The Titans got two dramatic title match victories at 126 (Heil) and 182 pounds (Paletta), respectively, and added wins at 113, 120, 138 and 285 pounds by Bryan Kennedy, Pino Dipierro, Caden Wendling and Daniel Yu to distance itself from second-place Olmsted Falls. Along the way, Shane Heil earned his second sectional crown with his 3-1 decision over North Royalton’s David Miller IV.
Ten Titans earned their way to the OHSAA District Tournament, which will be held March 6-7 in Perrysburg.
Our Titans Gymnastics team made the podium at the OHSAA state gymnastics championships on Friday, placing 6th overall in the team competition. Overall our girls had a great performance, with the floor competition being their top team score of the evening with a 36.55 (2nd place).
Freshman Marissa Jones and Brooklyn Varga both qualified to compete in the individual competition on Saturday. Marissa capped off an incredible weekend by placing 2nd in the vault with a new Titans record score of 9.575. Marissa also broke a school record on the floor competition by posting a 9.350.
Congratulations to both teams, their coaches, and all the parents who have been great supporters this season!
