Classroom Happenings
Wonders
As you know, our class is focusing on key skills during these first few weeks of school. These skills will provide a strong foundation for our learning this year. This week our class discussed and read stories about things kindergarten children can do.
Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we are practicing.
Category Words: days of the week Help your child find the names of the days of the week on a calendar or in the newspaper and read them. Write each name and read the name with your child. Write sentences containing some of the days of the week, and have your child circle them.
Letter Identification: We are working on letters and sounds every day. We sing songs, read books, and practice together during carpet time. Please practice these skills at home.
Daily 5
Daily 5 is a structure for learning about literacy. It's what the other kiddos are doing when I am working with a reading group. Students choose which of the five activities they want to work on during each 15 minute round (we complete 3 each day). The five choices are: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Writing, Listen to Reading and Word Work.
We are currently building stamina for Read to Self, Read to Someone. Each week I will introduce a new Daily 5 activity until we have completed learning how to complete all five, then we will begin our rotation schedule. Next week, we will begin building stamina with Listen to Reading (on an ipad).
Math
During these first few weeks of school, we spend time establishing our Daily Routines. We record attendance and discuss our observations, we track daily activities with our schedule and monthly calendar, sequence daily events.
