From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
As many of you know, I’m going on maternity leave in April. I’m very excited to welcome Karen Daly, retired principal and my mentor for the last three years, who will be taking over in my absence for the last few weeks of school. Karen will be here on Tuesday, March 10th at the end of the school day to meet with families who are available at this time. Please join us from 3:00-3:45 in the library for a brief meet and greet.

A few reminders…
Please be sure to send students to school with warm outdoor clothes. Lunch recess is 30 minutes each day in addition to the morning or afternoon recess for each grade level.
Please keep your child home if they have a fever, are vomiting or have diarrhea. Our custodial crew is working hard to keep our building as clean as possible with district approved cleaning materials and techniques. Please help us prevent the spread of germs with keeping sick children home for at least 24 hours after a fever or vomiting.
We’re reminding students to wash their hands frequently and to cover their cough. Here are some informational videos if you’re interested:

PTA News
Hello all,
Yearbook Ads
As a fundraiser, the NES PTA is selling ads in the yearbook. 5th-grade parents: this is a great opportunity to celebrate your rising middle school student and create the perfectly embarrassing keepsake for first dates for years to come. The ad sales are not limited to 5th-grade parents and are a great way for local businesses to advertise. We can help you create an ad. The deadline for submission is 3/16. Completed ads received by 3/9 and are eligible for a 20% discount. Email treasurer@nespta.com with any questions you may have.

March Classroom Lesson
We are revisiting the topic of “self-exploration.” Students will explore their strengths, interests, passions, and learning styles. The overall goal of this month’s lesson is to help students gain more self-awareness in order to appreciate their individual uniqueness and strengths. This lesson will support our work in April and May as we dive into the world of work.
Donations Needed!
We are in need of magazines (lifestyle, travel, sports, etc.) for an ICAP lesson later this month. Please drop off in the box in the entryway by Wednesday, March 18th. Thanks!

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (March 2 -6, 2020)
By default, our reptilian brains encourage us to assume the worst about people and situations; to quickly jump to conclusions and react before separating facts from opinions.
One "Stop and Think" strategy to counter our knee jerk reactions to life is to pause and ASK CURIOUS QUESTIONS ~
What are all the facts here? Do I know the whole story?
What are at least two possibilities for what is happening?
What are some reasons other people would say or do that?
Curious, open-ended questions can help us gather more info and understand other perspectives. Instead of using questions to drill others and trigger their own defensiveness, consider which open-ended questions will help you better understand the situation: Hey, what's going on? Can you tell me more about.... What happened? How are you feeling about this? When we learn to use curious questions, it keeps us in a problem-solving mode rather than in an intense reactive condition. Help your child "Stop and Think of Curious Questions" when they are upset and can only see things from one perspective. Read more at: Can't get through to your child?
