NEWS FOR GRADE 4 - 6 ARABIC
الاهداف الصفية Class Goals
Class Goals: Our biggest goal in the Arabic classroom is for the students to enjoy learning Arabic as much as they enjoy other subjects. We also want the students to think of Arabic as a practical language, not a language that is used solely in the Arabic classroom. We want our children to be enthusiastic about learning Arabic and inquire in ways that enhances their fluency. It is crucial for the parents to encourage their children to engage in the language whether by talking to them in Arabic (Arabic spoken at home) or to encourage them to talk and share information about what is going on in the classroom (Arabic is not spoken at home.)
Students' Goals: Students were asked to write at least one goal they would like to accomplish in the Arabic classroom to develop a sense of ownership and increase their excitement for learning Arabic. Later, we combined those goals and designed a document that is posted in the Arabic classroom.
The goals are as follow:
- Learn new words, and numbers
- Learn how to write
- Learn how to read-- reading the Qur'an
- Understand the Qur'an, and speak
What is happening in the Arabic classroom ماذا يحدث في الصف العربي
Assessment: We must assess each student thoroughly in order for us to be able to address his/her needs. Please keep in mind that the focus in the Arabic classroom is on students' fluency in the language and not their grade level. The students were divided into two groups and were asked to come up with their own group name. This will help them take ownership of their learning process. We chose the word “team” “فريق” to build the spirit of cooperation and collaboration. The class was divided into two different groups, each group came up with their official group name as follows:
فريق النجوم “Fareeq An-Nujoom” “The Stars Team”
- Reading and Comprehension: We are currently reading a story (My brother and me انا واخي) that talks about daily routines
- Speaking: Students go around in a circle and share information about their daily routines:
- I wake up at… استيقض عند الساعة
- I shower at… استحم
- I clean/ organize my room انظف/ ارتب
- I brush my teeth افرش اسناني
- I eat breakfast اتناول / آكل الفطور
- I go to school اذهب الى المدرسة
- How many time each activity is being done a week? كم مرة في الاسبوع
- Telling time: Students practice by writing down the correct time presented on the board كم الساعة؟ الساعة الآن ...
- Writing: Students write their daily activities after reading and practicing daily activities introduced in the story (My brother and me انا واخي)
فريق النمر الاسود “Fareeq An-Nimr Al-Aswad” “The Black Jaguar Team”
- Writing and New Vocabulary: Students are currently conjugating the following verbs in the past (to ask سأل , to read قرأ, to take أخذ , to go ذهب )
- Putting Words Together and Creating Sentences: A list of vocabulary words is introduced to the students. They practice using these words by putting them in sentence i.e. I asked the teacher a question
The list of vocabulary words are as follows:
1. سؤال
2. الى المدرسة\ الى المسجد \ الى المكتبة
3. كتاب\ كتابي\ كتاب هاري بوتر
4. المعلمة
5. انا\انتَ\انتِ
- Speaking: Students first repeat words after the teacher, think about and write creative sentences, and then share the sentences they created with the whole class. In addition, they practice greeting, asking how one is doing and introduction
السلام عليكم وعليكم السلام، مرحبا، اهلاً وسهلاً
...ما اسمك؟ اسمي
كيف حالكَ، كيف حالكِ
انا بخير الحمد لله
Classwork vs homework الواجب المنزلي ازاء الواجب الصفي
In the Arabic classroom, we focus on classwork rather than homework. Students will have some homework at times that is not designed to overwhelm the students i.e. listening to a song, watching a short clip, or reading a short story. The goal is to work with students in class in a collaborative manner to enhance their language skills. We will be working on new information introduced in the class as a group; students will also be divided into small groups to work on specific language skills assigned that day such as writing, new words, or reading.
