New Additions for the 2018-2019 School Year

Student Book Checkout

HOW MANY BOOKS ARE STUDENTS ALLOWED TO CHECKOUT?

Book checkout is unlimited, as long as students do not have outstanding overdue books.

ARE THERE CERTAIN BOOKS THAT STUDENT ARE ALLOWED/NOT ALLOWED TO CHECK OUT?

Like in a public library, students are able to check out whatever books they would like. We strive to keep a collection that has material that is relevant, interesting, and appropriate for our students. Does that mean that every book in the library is appropriate for every student? Of course not! Students will be instructed on strategies that they can use to find "Just Right Books" for them, when they come for library lessons. However, please understand that if a student continues to want to check out a material that may be too challenging to them or that we may not necessarily choose for them, we cannot deny them access to the book. If a parent does not want their child to read a specific book, they are more than welcome to return it and select a new book. As a family, please speak with your child so that they understand what books you are comfortable with them reading.

WHEN ARE BOOKS DUE?

Books are due every time your child has library. Some classes come for checkout weekly, others have library lessons biweekly. If you child finishes their book early, there are open checkout times scheduled throughout the week where they may come down to the library with a pass from their teacher to return their books and select new titles.

1 WEEK OVERDUE (2 weeks for biweekly students)- students may still check out one book

2 WEEKS OVERDUE (4 weeks for biweekly students)- students may not check out a book until the books are returned. They may look at books during checkout time.

*Head Start and Kindergarten classrooms will have limited checkout while students learn the library routine and the responsibilities associated with checking out, taking care of, and returning books.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A BOOK IS LOST?

Lost materials will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the librarian via email.

Playaway Checkout

Playaways are wonderful devices that will read stories aloud to students. Many of these titles are also available on the shelves so that students are able to follow along as they listen to a book. Due to the cost of replacing misplaced Playaways, students who would like to check out Playaways will be given a form that will need to be signed by parents acknowledging the cost for replacement of the item before checkout of these materials is possible.
