Sustainable Ecosystems

There are many things you can do to make your home more "green" and eco-friendly.

The following are great ways to become more energy-efficient and reduce our ecological footprints:

-Switching to CFL lights can prevent the emission of over 400 pounds of greenhouse gases.

-Turn the lights off when not in use

-Unplug electronics when not in use, electronic appliances, TVs, computers, etc consume a lot of energy

-Make use of the sun, the sun is the cheapest and most eco-friendly heat and light source, open the drapes and let solar energy warm and brighten your home naturally

-Buy house plants: these house plants act as natural air filters

ex. spider plants, Boston ferns, rubber plants, palm trees, etc.

Since we would most likely be located in the Temperate Deciduous Forest, these type of plants would be suited for the weather, type of soil, amount of precipitation, etc.

My Vegetable Garden

My garden would consist of seed grown native perennial wildflowers, grasses and shrubs. Some of the native species in Ontario are: Arctic Fox, Bald Eagle, Beaver, Black Widow Spider, Blue Jay, Canada Goose, Canada Lynx, Caribou, Lady Bug, Moose, etc.

Through habitat loss and the introduction of non-native plant species, we are losing biodiversity. Gardening with native plants is crucial to restoring the natural ecosystem and is almost as important as preserving existing ecosystems.

Native plants improve the overall health of pollinating insect populations, including supporting many species of bees and butterflies.

I would use natural fertilizers and pesticides (bone meal from animals or pyrethrin from flowers). This excludes synthetic petrochemical fertilizers & pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic use in livestock; genetically modified organisms; human sewage sludge; and nanomaterials. Reasons for this are sustainability, openness, independence, health and safety

Can you still get places without polluting the air?

The obvious answer is yes!

Hybrid cars use 2 types of power sources- traditional gasoline engines and an alternative fuel source such as electric or hydrogen-run motors.

Better gas mileage- A hybrid car gets 5 miles per gallon better mileage on average than a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle. And, because hybrid cars run on alternative fuel sources, they do not need to be filled up with gasoline as often, cutting overall gasoline consumption and cost.

Fewer emissions – When gasoline is burned to produce energy for vehicles, carbon monoxide is created and released into the environment. However, with hybrid cars, much less carbon monoxide is released into the atmosphere, reducing emissions and air pollution.

Decreased fuel demand – As hybrid cards become more mainstream, the demand for fuel could decrease, potentially leading to less drilling and lessening the risk for negative impacts on the environment.

There are pros and cons to hybrid cars, but biking/walking is another option.

When the trip is short, I can just bike or walk to where I need to go and it will save energy that would've been used if I were to go by car.

Giant Panda: Endangered!

Why They Matter | Why They're Endangered

According to a 2004 survey, there are only 1600 pandas in the wild.

One the main reasons that pandas have become endangered is habitat destruction. As the population in China continues to grow, pandas' habitat gets taken over by development, pushing them into smaller and less livable areas.

Pandas play a crucial role in the bamboo forests where they roam by spreading seeds and facilitating growth of vegetation. Pandas bring huge economic benefits to local communities through ecotourism.

Pandas are helpful not harmful, so I believe we should fight for their rights of living in their homes without being interrupted by humans.

Atoms, Elements, & Compunds

Bisphenol A, or BPA

This hormonal chemical has been found to act like estrogen, with current exposure levels leading to things like decreased sperm production in men, early puberty in girls, and fertility problems in both genders, or that animal studies have linked it to greater chances of miscarriage. BPA also interferes with metabolic hormones and plays a role in heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

BPA is found in the linings of food cans, and it's used as a coating on receipts.

Arsenic

Arsenic is best known for its ability to cause cancers of the skin, bladder, and lung, there is no other element or chemical known to cause as many health problems as arsenic can, according to the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Superfund Research Program, and those include endocrine problems. Arsenic has been found to interfere with receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, including hormones that regulate your metabolism and your immune system.

Arsenic was historically used in pesticides and it exists naturally in soil. Recent tests from Consumer Reports have found high levels of the metal in rice and apple and grape juices, and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health has found high levels in factory-farmed chicken.

Symbol: As

Atomic Mass: 74.92

Arsenic is a metalloid. It is in group 15, period 4.

Boiling Point: 613°C

Melting Point: 816.8°C

Sodium hydroxide (also known as lye and caustic soda)

It can burn the eyes, skin, and lungs and isn't good for the respiratory system. It may also lead to nasal passages and chronic skin irritation.

Found in: oven cleaners, bathroom cleaners, disinfectants, drain openers, and toilet bowl cleaners

Solar Energy

A solar energy system adds to your property value without adding any tax liability.
  • Home based solar power is a quiet, nearly maintenance free, continuous source of electricity.
  • Solar electric systems reduce pollution and CO2 emissions by generating electrical power using radiant Sun light that can replace electricity that comes from coal fired electrical plants. Solar power systems generate electricity at power usage times (during the day) when the value and cost of electricity is the highest. Modern grid-tied home solar power systems can use the cheap rate grid power at night and reduce or eliminate the need for the high rate electrical power during the day. Home-owners can actually push power back into the electrical grid during the day and run their meters backwards which is generates energy credits and even capital. One popular renewable energy source is solar power. By converting the power of the sun into electricity, solar energy is clean, green, will never run out and, after the initial cost of the solar panels, is entirely free.

    STAY ENERGY EFFICIENT!!

The physical structures that will help make my home more energy efficient and will reduce the amount of energy being wastes are:

    • Windows
    • Sun roofs
    • Solar Panels
    • Wind Mills

By using natural sources of energy such as the wind and the sun, we only use energy that we need and still does its job.

    ENERGY STAR

Eco friendly appliances (Energy Star appliances) can greatly reduce the energy and water consumption and environmental impact of your household. All appliances such as fridges, stoves, microwaves, washing machines that have the Energy star label indicates that homeowners save energy and protect the environment by giving them the information they need to make smart choices about efficiency and recognizes excellence in energy-efficient performance.

    The Study of the Universe

    THANKS NASA!

Because of space exploration, we now have cordless tools (i.e. wireless mouse, cordless phone, etc.

In the years following the Apollo Program (1989) , Black & Decker refined this spin-off technology and created entire lines of handy cordless tools for widely different industries. The cordless tool brings flexibility and freedom of movement to the surgeon in the operating room, the professional building contractor, the handyman at home, the gardener, the worker in the plant, and the homemaker.

Invented in 1963 by Douglas Engelbart, a Stanford researcher, the mouse has evolved from a simple interface device to a complex tool that is vital for today's computer user.
