What's New?

Hi Families,

The end of the year is quickly approaching! Our 5th Grade Golden Folder Assembly will take place on the last day of school, Thursday, June 9th. This is not a "graduation" ceremony, however, it is a celebration of how the students have grown as writers over their years at Greenbriar. A collection of their writing has been saved in a Golden Folder and passed on to the next teacher each year. Parents are invited to attend this assembly and stay to watch the video portion of the yearbook afterward. The celebration starts at 1:00.

Thank you to everyone who came out for Open House this week! The students were excited to share the work they've been creating in the classroom. They have been working very hard on their Civil War Bulletin Boards (pictures below). Some teachers voted on Friday, and the winner will be revealed on Monday!

The ABC countdown continues this week! Here is the schedule:

Have a great weekend!

MATH

This week we continued to practice finding the volume of three dimensional figures. We finished up our geometry unit this week with our test over Chapters 14/15. Some students were able to correct their tests and took them home on Friday. Others will finish correcting on Monday and take their tests home at that time.

Next week, we will begin learning Algebra!

Science

This week we talked about Matter! The students learned that there are actually four states of matter, though we typically only refer to three: solid, liquid, gas (and plasma!). We learned that all matter is made up of atoms which are too small to be seen even with a microscope.

Writing

We continued our work with informational picture books. Students are learning more techniques author's use to make informational picture books more interesting. Next week we will begin putting our writing into book format using iBook Author.

We also created Civil War Poetry. The students brainstormed words that might describe the feelings of soldiers and civilians after the war. They then crafted these words into some creative poems!
