CURRICULUM MAPS-A CLOSER LOOK AT THE WRITING COLUMN
- The first box/row in the Writing column details the number of longer and shorter writings students should produce each year. The longer writings are between 2-10 pages and should be accompanied by explicit teaching and mentors or samples of the writing assignment. (Our newest resource, Literature Mini-Qs comes with mentors and samples for each writing assignment.) The explicit teaching should cover some aspect of the writing process or some part of constructing fully-develeped compositions with intro, body, conclusion, and transitions. This instruction can be taught in mini-lessons to allow for a workshop style. For example, you might focus your explicit teaching for one of the longer writings solely how to provide evidence and elaboration in body paragraphs. The shorter writings should be less than 250 words and can offer practice on items explicitly taught during the longer writings.
- The same box provides links to prompts from AIR and LDC and reminds you of resources you have for writing, such as Units of Study in middle school and Springboard Writing Workshops in high school. It also reminds you that each of the newer teacher resources for novels on your curriculum/instructional resource pages contains 9 prompts.
- The second box/row in the writing column gives you ideas to help adhere to the mission of Read, Write, and Discuss Every Day!. Some suggestions are given for daily writings that don't fall into the longer or shorter writings in the first box.
- The third box/row reminds you of the requirements for the digital portfolio. This is simple because these are owned by the students who keep their writings in a Google folder and reflect on the work and themselves as writers at the end of the year.
- The final box/row gives you links to writing requirements based on the ODE Rubric used on the AIR tests and numerous other rubrics.
Here are links to all of the Curriculum Maps, which can also be found on the Curriculum/Instructional Resources 6-8 & Curriculum/Instructional Resources 9-12 pages on the ELA 6-12 Webpage.

Middle Schools: A Place to Belong and Become, Presented by Patti Kinney, Laurie Barron, Wednesday, November 20, 2019, 4–5pm ET
If we reduce down what research tells us about quality middle level education, two concepts rise to the top—belonging and becoming. Schools must be places where students feel they belong and are both respected and valued. They must also be places where students can become, where their academic and personal potential is recognized and nurtured. Based on the AMLE book of the same name, the authors, both award-winning former middle level principals, will share practical strategies they used to ensure their schools were a place where students could both belong and become.
