Principal's Corner
Volume VI - November 26, 2017
Congratulations to the November Teacher of the Month.... Ashton Allgood!
What did the students say?
- Because she knows how to teach. During powerhour, she actually interacts and asks us what we need help on in order to help us.
- Because, she gives opportunities to truly engage us in the activity with lab.
- She's very helpful and her class is fun and interactive.
- Because her teaching style is great and she makes chemistry easy to understand.
Notes from the RHS Administrative Team
Please be diligent about holding at-risk students accountable by making them go to tutoring if the student has below a 70. Use lunch detention as a reinforcement.
- 'Tis the season for dress code issues. Please tell students to remove their headwear inside the building.

Musical News
Musical season has begun! This year, musical rehearsals take place during PowerHour Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. All students involved in the musical are required to maintain a 70 minimum in all of their classes. Mr. Fields is a huge help keeping me up to date with their grades, but if you have any concerns about students, please let me know. Also, students and parents have been told that academics are the number one priority. If any student tells you they are unable to come to PowerHour tutoring because they have rehearsal, this is not acceptable. The only thing I ask from the student is that they communicate with me when they will need to miss rehearsals for tutoring. Please notify me directly with any issues or concerns.
Thank you- Ms. Dransoff

Science Fair!
The Onslow County Science and Engineering Fair was held on Tuesday December 12th. Two Richlands High School engineering projects will advance to the Regional Fair at UNCW on February 10th. Brian Carrington, Jason Lassila Jr and WIlliam Price are advancing with Test Pacer 5000. This is a device that they created as a training tool to help students learn how to pace themselves when taking exams such as the SAT and ACT. The second project to advance is B-Right Start by Caroline Beaty. This project is a portable starting block for swimmers. The RHS swimmers often practice at a pool with no starting block so Caroline's project solves that problem. Congrats to these winners and all who participated.

Grant Opportunities
Duke Energy North Carolina Match Offer
I’m excited to share news about a grant we’re launching on #GivingTuesday in partnership with DonorsChoose.org.
Duke Energy will provide $175,000 in matching grants for North Carolina teachers to foster literacy and bring engaging science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) projects to life in their classrooms.
Here is how it works: Teachers in your district can submit K-3 literacy and K-12 STEM project proposals (for up to a total project goal of $1,000) to DonorsChoose.org, where the public can provide funding.
The Duke Energy Foundation will match all donations made toward these classroom projects at public schools in eligible counties*, up to $500 a project. The project donations will be matched on a first-come, first-served basis until the $175,000 goal is reached. For example, if you donated $50 toward an eligible project, a $50 Duke Energy match will automatically be applied to the project.
Teachers can visit DonorsChoose.org/teachers to submit a project. Qualifying projects already posted to the site will automatically be eligible for Duke Energy’s matching funds on new donations made on or after Nov. 28.
Parents and other members of the community can help fund projects by visiting www.DonorsChoose.org and searching for projects by school name, teacher name and/or the "North Carolina STEM and Literacy" match filter. DonorsChoose.org will continually update this page with a list of all projects eligible for the Duke Energy match.
You and I both know our children are the future leaders of our communities, and we must support their success. I hope you can share this great news with the teachers, parents and community leaders in your district. If you’re active on social media, consider a post to share this opportunity:
