Principles for KT

Based on Barwick's (2013) KT Planning Template-R & KTPC training

  • Develop plain language, main messages tailored for audience
  • The 30 second elevator pitch! (get at the heart of it)
  • Focus on verbs, not nouns (Cathy R.), careful use of language is critical
  • Messages that aren't blaming (Helene) or take a revolutionary approach?
  • Develop clear KT goals (e.g. awareness, generate policy change, practice change...)
  • Choose KT methods that have effective results
  • Important to coordinate timing of messages with media and political agendas (Yasmin)
  • Consider resources required
  • Consider measuring impact and evaluation (e.g. outputs, process measures, tech metrics)
  • Remember that building relationships is key with any strategy or approach
