LOOK Who Was Sent to the Principal's Office!
We love our students and are thrilled when they are recognized for all the positive acts of kindness they contribute in their classrooms!
Miss Wetzel's Counselor Corner
This week during the Steps to Strong In Every Way time, our students are continuing to learn skills for learning like self-talk for staying on task or listening, being assertive, planning to learn, and respecting similarities and differences. Self-talk is an important skill for learning that students can use to stay focused, stay on task, and ignore distraction! The ability to communicate assertively not only contributes to academic success, but it is also important for solving problems and standing up for oneself or others. People can have similar or different feelings about the same situation. Being able to notice and then understand others’ feelings is an important part of empathy!
The grade levels’ link below will take you to a page called Home Links. Some Steps to SIEW lessons have fun activities for you and your child to complete together! If you do not have a home link for the lesson this week, ask your child what they learned and how they plan to practice the skill at school and home. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows!
SGE Spotlight: First Grade
First graders have been learning about community. We’ve invited guests from our community to come into our classrooms as mystery readers. Lisa Cox, former Stonegate counselor and co-author of “Grit not Grits”, read her book and discussed how to make everyone feel welcome. Deputy Todd also read to the first graders and discussed his new role at Stonegate. Additionally, we’ve begun using technology in our learning. We’ve used Chromebooks to access Canvas and iPads during reading and math workshop. We’re off to a great start!
Family Wellness Night
FAMILY WELLNESS NIGHT is next THURSDAY, September 20th 6:00-7:30. Come on a journey to learn how our brain and body work together to be STRONG in EVERY WAY! Activities will highlight various parts of our brain and how it functions. It truly is AMAZING! There will also be a Wellness Community Fair and prize drawings. Please come spend the evening with us and our community partners in wellness.
September Brain Boost Challenge
It is hard to believe we are 1 month in to school! It has been a great start to a new school year! In the spirit of our September Family Wellness Night theme, The Brain/Body Connection, what better way to get our "Brainbows" lit up than with a BRAIN BOOST CHALLENGE! Please visit my Canvas page for more details. https://zcs.instructure.com/courses/15361 Students will earn their "Toe Token" each month they complete the challenge. I encourage all family members to participate and show your STRONG IN EVERY WAY using the hashtag #SGEWellness360 to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

Parent Teacher Conference E-Day- Thursday, Oct. 4th
- Our first E-Day is just around the corner! Thursday, Oct. 4 students will be at home with access to Canvas and the learning modules teachers have prepared for the day.
- Teachers will be putting practice E-Day activities in a Canvas module, soon. Look for information in their weekly newsletters. Please have your child practice the modules so your family will be prepared for E-Day.
- Teachers will have very limited availability to assist during the actual E-Day. Have your child practice in advance so your family can ask questions prior to E-Day, Thursday, Oct. 4th.
- Students will have one week from E-Day to complete their modules. Life happens (ie, internet goes out) we get it! Please know, all elementary students will have one full week to get the work completed.
2nd Annual International Fair!
SGE is excited about its 2nd annual International Fair this Fall! We invite families to sign up, set up a small table or booth, and share their culture or present a country to which they feel personally connected. During this event, our students will have an opportunity to travel the globe to experience the different cultures enriching the Stonegate community. Want to participate but don't have a country to represent? We can help team you up with another family! Please help us kick off the preparation for this event by completing the quick form here. We look forward to your support and participation and can't wait to have you join us for the 2018 International Fair. We will be in touch in September to further coordinate. Questions? Please contact Afshan Paarlberg at azraza2@gmail.com.

2018 Jog-A-Thon Fundraiser
We kicked off our 2018 Jog-A-Thon fundraiser with Stonegate students on Wednesday this week! Lots of "zoo animals" were on hand to get the kids excited and to share details of our fundraiser. Pledge packets also went home this week with more information for parents.
Jog-A-Thon is Wednesday, September 26th (rain date Friday, September 28th). Students will walk or jog around a 1/4 loop in front of the school (we block off the streets around The Commons). Our goal is to raise $20,000 to support math and literacy materials, technology, enrichment grants, field trips, and special projects for each grade. To do that, we are challenging each student to raise $50 in donations. 100% of the donations collected by Stonegate students will directly impact our school. Money and pledge forms should be returned by Friday, October 5th.
We will raffle off a zoo stuffed animal in every class! Everyone who participates in Jog-A-Thon gets one raffle entry. If you bring in at least $50 in donations, you get 2 raffle entries!
Jog-A-Thon is a success because of our volunteers! We need your help cheering on the kids, helping them stay on the course, marking their shirts for each lap completed, and handing out water. ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE A FULL BACKGROUND CHECK. To volunteer, please visit https://sge.ivolunteer.com/jat_2018
The Jog-A-Thon schedule is divided into 3 sessions. The preschoolers and kindergarteners will walk for 30 minutes while the older kids will walk for an hour. Including warmup and cooldown, the schedule is as follows:
- 1st and 2nd grades 8:15am - 9:45am
- Preschool and Kindergarten 10am - 11am
- 3rd and 4th grades 12:20pm - 1:50pm
If you have any questions, please email mailto:SGEJAT@gmail.com
Want to Attend a Pacers Game?
Mark your calendars for this year’s Stonegate night at a Pacers game on Saturday, October 20! Indiana Pacers vs Brooklyn Nets at 7:00PM. This is a fun activity for the family if you are having a stay-cation during Fall Break and if you can’t go on October 20 the Pacers are offering discounted tickets to three other games. Stonegate PTO receives a portion of all ticket sales! Info packets will be going home in student folders next week.
For those who will attend the October 20 game, we are looking for a few students with parents to go on the court at halftime and be recognized with the other groups having their fundraising night the same evening. Please contact Meredith Deneau, mjdeneau@earthlink.net, if you are interested.
BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

Did You Know?
ZCS, like other public schools, has a no-idling policy for vehicles on campus. The purpose of the policy is to limit vehicle emissions that might be brought into the schools and adversely impact the health of our students and staff. If you are stopped on campus for more than 5 minutes, please remember to turn off your engine. We thank you for abiding by this policy to help reduce the exposure to these emissions.
