Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
October 11th, 2019
From the Assistant Director
Fall has officially arrived! I hope this newsletter finds the wider Dalton community doing well!
This week was capped off with our annual event - We Run Cheongna! This is one of our major community building events held at the beautiful Lake Park right around the corner from our campus. Students enjoyed music, the great outdoors, time with their friends and also ran/strolled around the 5km course!
It was really great to see our students smiling and enjoying time together as a majority of our time is spent contemplating and learning in classrooms. I was inspired by students giving their all in the 5k race, many students putting up their personal best times! The student council did a great job encouraging one another to be active and helped ensure we left the place better than when we found it. I also greatly appreciate the efforts by our staff to help ensure this event was fluid. It was a great team effort.
One image that is burned into my mind is that of Jiwoong Lee (Class of 2020) coming across the finish line, arms stretched out, smile on his face, and the crowd cheering him on. This exemplifies our school value of character. To courageously face adversity and accomplish a goal. It is what we hope for our students in all areas of their lives. It was certainly a great event and I look forward to it again next year!
This upcoming week we will hold our second Parent Teacher Forum focusing on the issue of bullying from 3-4pm on October 17th. All parents are welcome to come and discuss the issue collaboratively with our faulty and offer potential solutions. We will also host a volleyball game on Wednesday - hope you can join us!
I hope that all parents mark the the 23rd of October as this will be our first Parent Teacher Conferences of the year. This is a great opportunity to hear about your students progress, ask questions and discuss ways you and their teacher can help your child attain their goals. Next week we will be sending out information about how you can sign up to meet your child's teachers from 2-8pm. Please note that students will be released from school at noon on this day.
It was a great week and I hope students have a restful weekend as we quickly approach the end of the first term.
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman

"This year has seen changes to a lot of clubs, but one thing that has remained constant is the boys’ desire to play football. In previous years it has earned a reputation for being a highly competitive club with more students signing up than there were slots available. Led this year by two 11th grade students, Caleb Park and Juhna Mun we sat down at the start of the year and thought about ways to improve the club. It was decided that the overall goal of the club was to improve the students’ footballing skills, fitness, awareness and tactical plays. In contrast to last year, we just played football continually the whole time.
Overall changes to the club are as follows:
Every session now starts with a quick warmup and stretching to help prevent injury.
The teams are decided before going to the field to allow more playing time.
More emphasis on development rather than winning.
Applying handicaps to teams which are dominating giving them a challenge too, such as you can only score with your weaker foot after 3 wins.
Mr Poch and Myself have been thoroughly enjoying the club so far this year. With new CDS students joining the club every year it’s wonderful to discover talented players and we can already tell that the boys high school football team will have a good showing again this year." - Mr. John Talbot

Upcoming High School Events
National History Day
Hello CDS, for those of you who are interested in National History Day… please pay attention!
NHD is not simply a history-related school event. It is one of the largest events hosted in our International schools, where hundreds of students attempt to participate. In fact, the event is not only hosted in Korea, but also in various regions across the world. This year, NHD Korea will be hosted once again at DALTON on 2/22/2020!!
Annually, over 600,000 worldwide students participate in this event, and less than half of them get to participate in the actual national round, which is, in other words, the ultimate-final stage you can get.
Every year NHD frames students’ research within a given historical theme. And for this year, the theme is ‘Breaking Barriers in History’, and more information about the topics for the projects can be found in the NHD theme book.
This year, NHD hosting club will be holding mentoring sessions for the participants. So please remember that we will be there for you to help during the process.
The hosting club members are here to support you guys!!
Categories information: splits into individual & group
*Groups may include 2-5 students. Group participants do not have to be in the same grade to compete together, but they must be in the same division.
Registration ends on SUNDAY DECEMBER 13, 2019 and you can register through NHD Korea website: https://sites.google.com/daltonschool.kr/nhdkorea

Parent Teacher Forum - Bullying
These small group will be made up of teachers and parents who will get together to talk, listen and brainstorm. This week we will focus on the issue of bullying. Through hearing a multitude of opinions and perspectives , we can get a better understanding of the issue and make suggestions to the administration about policy and direction.
We really hope that our parents can take some time during their day to join us on October 17th. We will review our norms and start brainstorming a list of items that require our communities attention.
Look forward to working together later this week!
