Save the Date: 2018 Journalism and Mass Communication Career Day
Mark your calendar for the 2018 Journalism and Mass Communication Career Day! This day-long event connects companies and organizations with students seeking careers in digital, print and broadcast journalism, creative mass media, media sales, advertising and public relations. Internships and full-time positions will be available. The day will include two career panel events, a networking luncheon and a career fair. Be on the lookout for preparation events leading up to the event at the start of spring semester.

Career Tip: Be Professionally Persistent
At a university recently, a student asked, "Do I have to write a follow-up thank you note after an interview? I don't want to bother the person."
"A thank you note is not an intrusion," I said, "It's part of your interview process. It's how you show you are truly interested in the position."
A career services professional from another university shed additional light on this: students say, "I feel like I am stalking the person." They need to learn to be "professionally persistent," that is, show interest without hounding.
This career services professional said these students, who text everything, are annoyed by emails, so they are reluctant to send an email to someone else. That's a generational difference – some of their elder peers would rather have an email. They see texting as the domain of family and close friends. Skilled leaders must navigate the generational differences.
After an interview, send two thank you notes:
One by email, in case the employer is making a decision in the next 24-48 hours.
A second, by postal mail, because that lingers longer than an email and makes an impression.
How you follow up not only shows your level of interest, it's also a demonstration of how you will communicate with co-workers, clients and other stakeholders, if you are hired. (This person sent an impressive thank you letter – wouldn't our clients love to get that?)
And I am going to suggest something really radical here: pick up the phone and call. Call just to say, "I'm still very interested in the job."
When are you crossing into stalker territory? Three calls in one week, daily emails and texting without asking for permission first.
Be professionally persistent. Because an employer (or client) who doesn't hear from you might assume you are not interested.
