Dear Parents
I am sure nobody could have predicted that Term 1 would end with our town basically shutting down ahead of what is usually the busiest time of the year.
This is all new to everyone and it is at this time we must remember that family and the wider community’s safety trumps our regular day to day lifestyle. At school we have been well guided by the Education Department and genuinely appreciate the support we have received from parents and students.
At the moment we are planning for a start to Term 2 without students at school. Teachers are initially planning two weeks of work that is relevant, is linked to what we are doing in the classroom and will assist students to improve knowledge and skills. We know that doing school work at home is not ideal but our staff will be available via email or by phoning the school to provide support. If any parents are looking for activities to complete now or during the holidays please refer to the Education Department site at https://www.education.wa.edu.au/learning-at-home .
On a positive note we did have a great start to the year, enrolments were up by 44 students on 2019 numbers. This has resulted in extra funding for our school which will see some school improvements. These include:
- Upgrade of the primary basketball court, similar to what we did with the secondary court in 2019.
- New furniture in 3 secondary classrooms (that will complete all secondary rooms) and 2 primary classrooms
- Upgrading a lot of our sporting equipment
- Purchase and installation of a commercial coffee machine into the Food Technology (Home Economics) room to assist in teaching students’ commercial skills.
We have also commissioned a feasibility study to look at installing solar panels on the school with a view to savings in electricity costs which are currently around $50000 per year.
All of these projects contribute to the long term strength of our school.
We were lucky enough to host our Beach Carnival ahead of the COVID 19 restrictions. The weather was fantastic and the day ran very smoothly, enjoyed by students, staff and parents. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to assist on the day and Ms Briggs and Ms Cameron for their excellent organisation and of course congratulations to the champions and all participants.
In finishing I want to sincerely thank the school staff for their work at this time. Our cleaners and support staff have gone above and beyond ensuring that the school is safe and ready every day; we have had plenty of soap and disinfectant, not by chance but by advance planning and preparation. To the staff who have worked every day, teachers, Education
Assistants and office staff thank you. At all times our aim has been to provide as much continuity as possible whilst dealing with questions and a daily changing environment.
I urge everyone to follow government directions to ensure the safety of our community. We look forward to school resuming as normal, as soon as possible but in the interim be assured we will try to support students and parents with regard to education.
Take care.

introducing the 2020 student councillors
Ethan Nunn - School Captain
I chose to become a Student Councillor because I wanted to improve my leadership skills and make sure that everyone’s voice is heard at school.
Luke Johnson - Year 10 Councillor
I applied to be a Student Councillor because I really enjoy helping others and I would like to improve the school experience of the students at Jurien Bay District High School. A fun fact about me is that I am also a cadet section leader and a junior volunteer firefighter at Jurien Bay VFRS.
Lincoln Deane - Year 9 Councillor
I wanted to be a Student Councillor because I wanted to help more people around the school and the community. I think the Student Council should help the school and the community as much as we can. An awesome fun fact about me is that I love sport!
Tane Perawiti - Year 9 Councillor
I like to describe myself as an outgoing and fun person who enjoys helping his peers. I joined the Student Council for the first time in 2019, and have so many more ideas for how we can improve the student experience at our school. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in 2020.
Lisa Willoughby - Year 8 Councillor
I wanted to join the Student Council because I wanted to give more students a voice. Having been a member of the Student Council last year, I wanted to show my commitment to my peers. I enjoy taking responsibility as well, which means this role is a perfect fit for me.
Claire Wheatley - Year 8 Councillor
I wanted to join this Student Council to make sure that the student’s voice is heard by the teachers and adults in our school community. I promise to do my best in and out of class and I will also represent our school values. One fact about me is that I love horse riding.
Ethan Powell - Year 7 Councillor
I chose to become a Student Councillor because I am kind, I will help other people and you can always trust me to be your friend.
Isabella Voss - Year 7 Councillor
I wanted to become a Student Councillor because I love helping people and I want to make the school a better place where everyone feels welcome. I would like the council to focus on student well-being so that everyone enjoys coming to school. I am a really friendly person and I am always open to have a chat.
Tom Rosenthal - Year 6 Councillor
I wanted to be a Student Councillor because I want to make the school more fun and interesting. I want the council to be a voice for students and be more active than it has been. One fact about me is that I like to play Lego and read books.
Mitchel Peacock - Year 6 Councillor
I wanted to be a Student Councillor so that I can help make the school a more interesting place and to give students a voice. A fact about me is that I love sport.
OUR FOCUS
Our 2020 focus is on student well-being! This means that we are looking for ways to make recess and lunch time more interesting and to build a sense of community in the school. We have already started brainstorming ideas for competitions and school events but would like your input! If you see us around, don’t hesitate to come and share your ideas.

Harmony Day Lunch
This year for Harmony Week the Year 9 & 10 Home Economics students, with the help of the Year 11 Food Science and Technology students and some amazing educational assistants made a multicultural lunch for staff.
Special thank you to master chef Mr Main who helped throughout the event, we could not have done it without your assistance.
The dishes cooked were picked by the students from different cultures including:

On the day over 30 meals were prepared, cooked and the students served their meals using correct safety and hygiene practices.

“My butter chicken and pad thai was out of this world yummy”
"Loved the sushi"
My classes would like to thank everyone who supported us and purchased a meal.
