Hubbard Woods Update

Principal Update:
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
I hope that you had a wonderful weekend. As it is getting colder, please remember to switch out your child's extra change of clothes that are kept at school.
There is a buzz in the building amongst students regarding the Covid vaccine. Please remind your children that vaccine information is something personal and they should not discuss it at school. Remind them that families make their own choices about medical decisions and all are to be respected.
With many vaccine appointments taking place, I wanted to remind you that when a child goes home early (even if they are coming back), parents must physically enter the building to sign them out. We are unable to release a child during school hours without an adult caregiver present. This protocol is in place for the safety and wellbeing of all children.
As we had a couple of cases this weekend, I wanted to remind you of the notification process. If someone from your child's classroom tests positive, you will receive a notification telling you that someone in their class has tested positive. The rest of the school will receive notice of the grade in which someone tested positive. You can assume that it wasn't in your child's class if you don't get the specific email telling you differently. As a reminder, we as a school are only responsible for establishing close contacts from school. When we say there are no close contacts, we have established that we kept social distancing IN SCHOOL and do not have close contacts here.
Today, Hubbard Woods third graders hosted a special guest, Dr. Amy Brodsky. Dr. Brodsky is a local dermatologist and founder of the Sun Hero Program. This is an educational program that teaches sun-safe behaviors in grade schools throughout the US. The program raises awareness of the importance of adequate sun protection in early childhood and increases the adoption of sun safety habits, thus motivating change and reducing the amount of skin cancer in our lifetime. Each third grade child received a sun-safety kit with sunscreen and other fun swag to support applying their learning to their lives. We have instructed children to have you check that the products are appropriate for their use.
A big thank you to all those who brought in Halloween candy for the candy drive with McClellan & Sagun Orthodontics. $1640 was donated to Lurie Children's Hospital!
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not express my gratitude for your partnership at this Thanksgiving time. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this community of learners. I hope you are able to have quality family time next week.
Very Sincerely,
Beth Carmody
Principal
Updates from the RC
Elementary School Principal Update:
Dear Winnetka Families,
Your child’s safety at school is of utmost importance to us. Creating a safe learning environment for all students is a key tenant of The Winnetka Public Schools. Throughout the school year, students are involved in a variety of experiences that support this commitment through activities that foster good citizenship and friendship and awareness of who they can turn to for help if an issue may arise. Please try to use the language below when discussing unkind behaviors with your child/ren. It is very important to know the difference as they have very different intentions.
Grades K-4
Rude - when someone says or does something and it hurts your feelings, but they didn’t mean to.
Mean - when someone says or does something to you on purpose to hurt your feelings on purpose
Bullying - when someone does something to you on purpose repeatedly to make you feel bad, hurt you, or acts like they are going to hurt you.
Our schools are committed to providing all students with common language, definitions, and methods to report any incidents related to bullying behavior. Click here to learn more about the Bullying Prevention & Response Plan, which includes identification, methods of reporting, and response protocols.
