A Weekly Communication from Principal Amy Baker

Friday, September 23, 2016

Izetta Sparks Elementary

Our mission is to know every student by name and need in order to ensure that all students learn at high levels.

Sparks Elementary is dedicated to developing a collaborative community of life-long learners where individual needs, high standards, academic success and cultural diversity are valued for all.

We Love our Watchdogs!

We had a great turnout last night for our Watchdog Kick-Off meeting. Many thanks to all of our families and dads that were able to come out, and a BIG thank you to Mr. Dawes and Mr. Melnick for their great presentation on the powerful impact being a Watchdog can have on the lives of our children. If you weren't able to make the meeting and would still like to get information about how to become a Watchdog, visit our PTA website by clicking here. Your family must be a member of PTA for you to participate.

Parent and Teacher Conferences

Soon you will be receiving information from your child's teacher regarding scheduling a conference. We encourage all of our families to either meet in person or by phone with their child's teacher to discuss your child's successes, strengths, and plans to promote further success for your child. While these conferences will be offered over a period of a few weeks, know that we believe that good communication is not a one-time event, but an ongoing system. Parents and teachers may request a conference at any time of the year so that we can work together to help each child progress in his or her learning.

We are increasing our conversations with our students about the importance of good digital citizenship and the need to protect usernames and passwords. These are great conversations to have at home, too! Here are some links to some resources that can help parents learn how to help keep kids safe online and guide them through teaching children what it means to have good digital citizenship.

Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 5th!

Mark your calendar for International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5th. This is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking to school on the same day! This year, in order to provide a more organized structure, especially for our younger students, we will have optional meeting points by grade at J.R. Newman Park. We are looking for parent volunteers at each grade-level to help organize and lead groups as they walk from the meeting locations to school. Please respond to if you are interested in helping out.

Reflections Program

The National PTA Reflections program is PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It offers students the opportunity to earn local, state and even national recognition for original artwork they create in response to a specific theme. Students who participate in the Reflections Program get an opportunity to explore the arts and culture, develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills and recognize themselves as artists. All entries are due by October 21st and you must be a member of PTA for your child to participate in the program.

Recognizing Student Achievements Outside of School

We have many students who are actively involved in a variety of activities and who achieve amazing things outside of school. We are very proud to celebrate with these students ALL that they accomplish each year. Click here to access the Star Student Form. Submissions can be sent to school with your child or dropped off in our front office.

Box Tops for Education

Collecting Box Tops is a quick and easy way to support our school! Simply cut them off of some of the products you have at home and send them to school with your child. Students will receive a SPIRIT STICK when they turn in their first Box Top for the school year AND get their name announced during the week over the intercom during morning announcements!
