Principal Keener's Message...
Dear Parents, Students, and Families,
There is much to teach our youth and the list seems to be growing year to year. From Mathematics, to Reading and Writing, Science, and Social Studies you will have to add Physical Fitness and Health, Music, and the daily changing - Technology Skills. Our teachers are continually training and we are proud to be on the cutting edge of today's public education.
With all these changes there are student traits that have timeless qualities which benefit us all. Taking care of yourself, getting a good night's sleep and breakfast is a great benefit to yourself and to those around you. So does extending yourself to others through helpfulness and friendship.
Here at Arctic Light we have a motto for being successful: Do Good Work, Be a Friend, Everyday. We feel this simple phrase captures the traits that build success. The phrase could easily be: Get Good Grades, Have Good Behavior, Show up to school on time everyday. As an employer I can attest these qualities are what bosses are looking for.
Your child is now part of an Alaskan animal house. Yes, the Game Wardens are noticing the extra activity on Post. Encourage your child to follow our motto as House points are given for these behaviors. At the end of September we'll have a school-wide assembly to celebrate our House winners for the month.
Do Good Work, Be a Friend, Everyday!

Encores at Arctic Light - by - Isadora Michael
At Arctic Light Elementary, there are all sorts of Encores you can do, starting with Yearbook to Culinary Capers. Everybody gets two Encores a day, four in total one Encore at one-thirty and the other at two-fifteen. At one-thirty right after recess Encores start. You have five minutes to get there, and when it starts you do all sorts of activities. The Encores last until December, the end of the second quarter. Then they will get new Encores for the third and fourth quarter which will last until the end of the fourth quarter in May. The Encores are designed for fourth through seventh graders, so everyone has different classes with different people from fourth through seventh graders. Some teachers will teach more than one Encore such as Yearbook, Drum Percussion, and more. At two-fifty-five the second Encore ends, which gives kids five minutes to get back to class, and get ready before the bell rings.
Positives at Arctic Light
Our classrooms have many ways of encouraging positive student behaviors. School-wide, Arctic Light uses Paws-ative Tickets for individual noteworthy student behavior. Students celebrate on our Bingo Behavior Board, send postcards home, and enjoy festivities as a group. Also, Arctic Light classrooms are within School Houses: Wolf, Polar Bear, Moose, or Raven. These houses compete for points through: attendance, behavior, and grades.
Do Good Work, Be a Friend, Everyday.
