Things that showed the direct characterization of Charlie was when he wrote in his journal:
Indirectly, Charlie seems to like Miss Kinnian. He takes her out for a dinner and after, he shows it directly by writing in his journal "I'm in love with Miss Kinnian," on pg. 365
Nothing directly or indirectly tells Charlie looks like, but he writes his age on pg. 347, saying "I am 37 years old and 2 weeks ago was my birthday." It also shows pictures from the movie, showing what he looks like. Refer to the Top Right. (Picture from Enotes.com)
At the beginning to show his emotions, he says it on pg. 352 "After the operashun Im gonna try to be smart. Im gonna try awful hard." It also indirectly tells he is determined.
A phrase Charlie says indirectly in his journal "Nothing is happining." He also says in the same paragraph that the Rorschach test is stupid by saying "Thse inkblots are stupid." directly to Dr. Strauss on pg. 353.
The actions of Charlie change rapidly after the operation. Before, he indirectly is nervous of the operation. He then openly admits "I'm skared." on pg. 352. A few weeks after the operation, he directly says he feels smart for beating Algernon by saying "I beat Algernon!" on pg. 357.
