Greek Communication

Through the Eyes of an American

Observation #1

  1. I've noticed that they talk loudly and rather assertively, of course that could be due to the fact that I have been in busy areas and shopping centers.
  2. It seems that a lot of them talk with their hands, in big motions-- possibly to emphasize what they are saying.
  3. Most Greeks know a little bit of english and can understand it. I thought that it was normal for the store owners in Athens to speak english because they are in such a touristy place, however, the barista at Coffee Island and the workers at the Gelato shop both spoke english.
  4. I have also noticed, that in passing on the street most Greeks don't smile at me, even if I smile at them. Perhaps this is because they can tell I'm American, or I'm a stranger, but in Oregon most people will smile at each other as the walk by.
