Returning to Full In-Person Learning

Your VCS Board of Directors approved a recommendation from your VCS Leadership & COVID Response Teams to pivot to full-day In-person learning (Monday-Friday) for all interested VCS families/students beginning on Monday, April 5th. We believe the new CDC guidelines and encouraging state and local metric trends, combined with the safety measures we already have in place at both campuses, can allow this in-person conversion to occur. Remote learning for the remainder of the school year will continue as an option for any VCS family that is uncomfortable with returning to In-person instruction.

VCS families also have the ability to “re-determine” their In-person or Remote choice through Friday, April 2nd. If you do not contact the front office, we will place all current hybrid (Cohort A/B) students into 5-day In-person learning, and current remote instruction students will remain remote. If you wish to make a change from this, please contact the VCS East or VCS West front office on or before Friday, April 2nd.

We found that PikMyKid was not going to work for our school for a variety of reasons. So, we are going to follow our usual protocols for carline.

In order for our carline to run smoothly and swiftly, please remember and follow these basic guidelines:

  • Left turns into the parking lot during drop-off/pick-up times are NOT allowed. Please approach the entrance from the EAST.
  • Drop-off: 7:20-7:50 a.m.
  • Pick-up: 3:15-3:45 p.m.
  • DO NOT SPEED. The speed limit within our carline is 5 mph.
  • If you are parking to drop off/pick up children, you may use the upper lot, however, you must pull completely into an available space. The parking lot is not to be used for drive through.
  • Pull up as far as you can in the driveway.
  • Please STAY OFF of your cell phones through the carline. This includes texting.

There are approximately 720 students who are being dropped off and picked up at the same time.

Model the character we want to see in our kids.

Though you may feel inconvenienced at times by our system, it is in place to keep your child(ren) safe. We ask that you respect these procedures as well as the people who are stationed out at carline. Your cooperation will ensure safety for everyone in our community.

Please observe the following traffic pattern at all times.

Beginning Tuesday, April 6th, our students will join other students throughout Colorado in taking a set of state tests called the CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success). The waiver for reduced testing was approved on Friday, 3/26 by the federal government, so testing sessions will be as follows:

  • 3rd, 5th, 7th grades: 3 ELA sessions only
  • 4th, 6th: 3 Math sessions only
  • 8th: 3 Math sessions & 3 Science sessions

We ask that you make a special effort to have your child(ren) to school on time every day as the assessments will begin soon after arrival. Listed below are important things students can do to help ensure they are ready each day to do their best.

  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast.
  • Come to school on time, every day.
  • Per state requirements, cell phones are not allowed in the testing environment. Secondary students must have their phones turned off and stored in their lockers. Elementary students must give their phones to their teachers to be placed in a secure location.
  • Do your very best.

Thank you for your assistance in our completion of CMAS testing.

According to Aurora Public Schools polices (adopted by VCS), IKA and IKAR, the parent/guardian of a student enrolled in the district may request that their child be exempt from participating in one or more state assessments.

Filling out the form below meets the requirements for our district and the Colorado Department of Education.

**Note: Students who will remain in the remote learning model for the remainder of the year must OPT IN to testing, so please contact Ms. Winner ( or Ms. Richardson ( if you would like your child to take the assessments.

9th and 10th graders will take the Colorado PSAT and 11th graders will take the Colorado SAT.

College Board partners use information from these test scores to expand access to various scholarships.

We encourage students and parents to explore an online help tool, Khan Academy, to prepare for these tests. Khan Academy gives students free personalized practice, including study and test-taking tips, six official full-length practice tests and a tailored

practice plan. Please visit

VCS East High School Girls Volleyball is Underway!

We are excited to finally kick off our athletics season with our VCS East Girls Volleyball team! Coach Jenny Young is building something special here at Vanguard that all other athletic and activity programs will need to match. To date, our team has been competitive in their matches with the JV's record at 1-1 and the Varsity at 0-2. They've only practiced together for about two weeks, and are continuing to grow as a team. Keep up the hard work Hawks and Coach Young!

Vision and Hearing Screening

Vision and hearing screening will begin Thursday, April 8th. Vision and hearing screening will be conducted on students in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, seventh and ninth grades.

Colorado state statute C.R.S. 22-1-116 states that “the sight and hearing of all children in the kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth grades, of children in comparable age groups referred for testing, shall be tested during the school year by the teacher, principal, or other qualified person authorized by the school district. Each school in the district shall make a record of all sight and hearing tests given during the school year and record the individual results of each test on each child’s records. The parents or guardians shall be informed when a deficiency is found. The provisions of this section shall not apply to any child whose parent or guardian objects on religious or personal grounds.”

*If you do not want your child to be screened please notify Ms. Buckman at by April 8th.

The goal of vision and hearing screening is to identify children who have a need for further diagnostic testing to determine the presence of an educationally significant hearing loss or issue with their vision. Periodic screening throughout childhood is very important to prevent delays in development. Some children who pass the screening may go on to develop vision or hearing loss gradually as it can occur at any age. Many children not passing a hearing screening may have temporary hearing loss due to middle ear conditions which require medical intervention or may not pass their vision screening due to not wearing their corrective lenses. Please be sure to send your student to school wearing their glasses if they are prescribed them! If your student doesn’t pass their Vision or Hearing Screening a parent or guardian will be notified by the health care team.

Remote Students: If your child is staying remote the rest of the school year, but you would like your child to be screened, please contact Ms. Buckman at to schedule a screening appointment.
