Principals for the Day!
Our students have the opportunity to purchase a "Principal for the Day" coupon through our PBIS Sailor Shop. Here are our first two principals of 2023!
Martin Luther King Jr.
(January 15, 1929—April 4, 1968)
He is considered one of history's greatest speakers and social activists. His leadership in peaceful protests helped end segregation during the American civil rights movement.
See the video below for more information on Martin's great impact!
School Uniform Reminder
We've noticed a couple students coming to school without the appropriate uniform.
Please see below for a reminder as to what clothing is appropriate uniform attire.
GRAVES K-4 Student Dress Code
SHIRTS/TOPS
Plain maroon collared polo or dress shirt with long or short sleeves is required. Plain black or white undershirts may be worn under the maroon collared shirt. Shirts must extend to waistline. Plain black or maroon sweaters or sweatshirts may be worn over the collared maroon polo or dress shirt or over a plain white or black undershirt.
*Only maroon hoodies are allowed.
PANTS
Must be black or khaki and worn at the waist. This includes shorts, capri pants, and skirts. Leggings may be worn, but only when a shirt extending to mid-thigh is worn as well.
FRIDAY SCHOOL SPIRIT
Students may wear any shirts given or bought through Graves School with Jeans.
*Please note that blue jeans are only allowed on Fridays
PBIS FUNDRAISER & HOLIDAY DRESS-DOWN DAYS
There will be days where students will be allowed to come without uniform due to
PBIS activities or holidays. A flyer will be posted via Seesaw when those days occur.
Dress for the Weather
While there are certainly instances where it’s unsafe to play outside, there are many opportunities to have fun on the playground on cold winter days. When going outside (properly dressed for the weather) our mood can be elevated with natural light, stress levels can be reduced and our mind gets a break from the classroom setting. Students will continue going out for recess when the weather is appropriate so please make sure that your child wears the a jacket to school.
Arrival/Dismissal
Now that it is getting colder outside and for student safety, no students should be outside on the school grounds before 7:30AM (M,T,TH,F) 8:30AM (W) as no one is available to let them in until the designated time.
Please make sure your child gets picked up on time during dismissal. As a reminder, teachers will wait an extra 5 minutes (2:55PM) outside by their designated door. Students who are not picked up by then will be taken to the main office, Door #14.

3rd and 4th Grade: Door #3
Absences
If you prefer, you can also email the absence to our secretary, Patty at: pcalvino@sd104.us
- Cold & Flu season is still among us. Please keep sick students at home and encourage frequent handwashing to protect others.
- Students should stay home until they are well enough to participate and are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Once your student starts improving, please test for covid and send back to school
with a negative result ASAP!
- Washing your hands is easy, and it's the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.
- Covid home test kits will continue to be given to students sent home with covid symptoms.
- “Once a week, take a peek” We have noticed an increase in lice cases; please check your child’s hair weekly to prevent an outbreak in your home.
Healthfully,
Nurse Tina & Nurse Anita

5 Steps to Calm Tantrums without Threats, Punishments, or Power Struggles.
5 Steps to Peacefully Calm Tantrums
1. Validate Feelings: validation is key in calming a tantruming child who simply wants to feel understood.
3. Meet the Need: Meeting the child's need is not a reward for "bad behavior." Behavior is a form of communication ; children simply speaks a foreign language. In order to effectively calm a tantruming child, you have to get to the root by meeting the underlying need- not the desire- but the root need ( there are 5 Basic Needs according to Dr. William Glasser)
4. Address Behavior: Did you know your child's brain cannot learn a lesson in a state of dysregulation. Therefore, connecting with your child and allowing them space to calm down before addressing negative behavior is crucial if you want to minimize tantrums in the long run and see them learn lessons.
5. Correct Behavior: Stopping behavior and correcting behavior are different. Threats, punishments, and even most consequences only stop behavior- they don't correct it. In order for children to build internal motivation to do what is right/good, they must be taught positive behaviors and skills

Mars has lower gravity than Earth. That means a person that weighs 200 pounds on Earth would only weigh 76 pounds on Mars.
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, with temperatures of over 842 degrees Fahrenheit.
Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that rotates on its side and Venus is the only planet in our solar system that spins backwards relative to the other planets.
