BOILER VISION
BUILT ON TRADITION, PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School has taken a progressive approach to education over the past four years. The district has written their own curriculum that takes into consideration state and national standards. This, along with a transition to Evidence-Based Learning with specific attention on assessment and support, has revolutionized the educational experience at BBCHS.
The Board of Education recently approved another move toward adding more technology into that experience. In fact, students will be totally immersed into what is called a 1:1 environment where Chromebooks will be issued to students at the beginning of the school year and collected at the conclusion of the school year. Students will use their Chromebooks throughout their day. The district views this move as adding another tool that teachers can utilize to bring their content area to life. Technology engages students and prepares them for their future, something the district believes to be their highest priority. Engaging in a 21st Century environment where students can hone their skills and learn with the most up-to-date information allows this to become reality.
BBCHS’ 1:1 technology initiative will meet the 21st century needs of students, teachers, and parents alike. Students will learn essential skills that will help them in their academic lives and better prepare them for the career they pursue. Teachers will be able to use unique tools to deliver our curriculum in an even more efficient and engaging way. Parents have the opportunity to become even more in tune with how technology affects their family and keep in touch with their son or daughter's learning on a daily basis. More information will be shared with parents as we move closer to the start of the 2017-18 school year. The 1:1 initiative will be an exciting addition to our educational experience and one that will better prepare our students for their future.
BBCHS Celebrates Black History Month
To celebrate Black History Month, Social Change Leaders Club hosted a poetry reading and music event featuring poetry and songs performed by BBCHS students and selections written by famous African American authors and artists. The celebration was held in the BBCHS Boiler Room and students were invited to enjoy the student performances during their lunch period. BBCHS students who performed were DeAndria Clark, Kiara Jackson, Jazmyne Gyles, Zakeece Burtis, Ashley Meyer, Ebony Brown, Anthony Williams, and Kayla Lake.
Social Change Leaders Club also displayed posters throughout the month of February to recognize African American leaders and their contributions to society. Social Change Leaders invited all teachers, administrators, and staff to take a ‘leadership walk’ throughout the halls of BBCHS to reflect on the various contributions by African Americans and share via social media how the leadership of various African Americans impacted their own leadership within the classroom and the school.
Additionally, earlier in the month, Social Change Leaders invited all students to attend a movie and pizza night to celebrate the achievements of African Americans throughout history.

BBCHS First Generation College Tour
The BBCHS Counseling Department had a very successful First Generation College Tour on Thursday, March 2nd. Twenty BBCHS juniors took a road trip to Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University to check out a public and private university. This tour was filled with valuable admission information, gorgeous building construction, classroom tours, resident hall tours, and delicious dining hall food! The students had time to ask admission counselors specific questions regarding the admission process, merit scholarships, FAFSA information, AP credit/Dual credit, teacher-student ratio's, as well as specific major questions. These trips provide students looking to attend a four year university the knowledge they need to make one of the hardest decisions they will have during their senior year. The BBCHS Counseling department encourages any student interested in attending a 4 year university after high school to visit the universities of interest and schedule a tour. It's never to early to start planning now for your future!

Spanish II Fashion Show
Spanish II students are learning about clothing and accessories and how to describe them. To make the outcome a little more interesting, students in Mrs. Olsen’s class brought in articles of clothing that represented the new vocabulary and “walked the catwalk” as their classmates described their interesting attire. Everyone had fun dressing up and describing the outfits but there were also making the words come alive because they were using their own clothing for the activity. Though not outfits they would wear to school, they still looked great!
Boiler Buttons Helps Students Raise Awareness
Mrs. Hammond and Mrs. Lindo co-teach a health class which has been working to become advocates for a student-selected health-related cause. Students have chosen to raise awareness for a cause that they connect with for on a personal level or through friends or family. Each week, the class has been building to our advocacy project. Students are developing their skills to increasingly become a voice for their cause. Mrs. Yonke’s class that runs Boiler Buttons joined together with this health class to teach them how to create buttons. Health students designed a unique button to show support for their cause and Boiler Buttons helped us to turn them into buttons. It was an awesome experience for all students and was a great way for students to show their support with pride.
