Principal's Message

Next week promises to be an exciting week here at Peachtree. On Tuesday, October 31st, our school will hold our first ever IB World Day. As an International Baccalaureate school, we work to provide our students with a rigorous curriculum and educational opportunities that results in internationally minded students prepared to work and thrive in our complex world. During our IB World Day, each grade level has been assigned a continent to represent - our children have been invited to dress-up in ways that represent that continent or its countries, and by now you have probably been given some guidance from your classroom teachers. The children have prepared flags at school and the entire student body will parade through the school and come together on our upper field for a small ceremony in which we will celebrate our world.

Also, next week we will participate in Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon week was established by a handful of concerned and determined parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention. The goals is to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth. Here at Peachtree we will talk to our children about making healthy and positive choices. We encourage you to continue the discussion at home.

What it means to BE IB

Peachtree Elementary is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) school. The PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12. The PYP curriculum involves students questioning, exploring, researching, and critical thinking to take ownership of their learning. This is known as an inquiry based approach to learning. Students’ inquiry is framed by six transdisciplinary themes for each grade level:

· Sharing the planet

· Who we are

· Where we are in place and time

· How we express ourselves

· How the world works, and

· How we organize ourselves

The transdisciplinary units frame the Gwinnett County AKS on a conceptual basis. You can find additional information about the PYP on the International Baccalaureate website – ibo.org.

Fostering Peachtree Families' love of literacy

The Peachtree Parent Center has long been committed to supporting the love of reading. Last year we introduced a new initiative that welcomes our youngest Peachtree Family members in to the world of literacy. Rock-A-Bye Reader is a first book for babies and parents. This book will be sent home with siblings when we learn of the birth of new babies. The Peachtree student (sibling) will receive a ribbon on the Peachtree News honoring them as a Literacy Ambassador. We encourage our families to send us a picture of the family sharing the Rock-A-Bye Reader book with the new baby. The picture will be posted on our bulletin board celebrating reading at home!
