Loose vs. Tight
What do we hold tight to?
- We will work in collaborative teams and take collective responsibility for student learning.
- We will monitor student learning through an ongoing assessment process that includes frequent, team-developed common formative assessments.
- Results of these common assessments and formative checks will be evident in lesson plans and data from them will be used to drive learning.
- We will intervene early and often with students who are not understanding a concept and enrich those that do.
These are the things that we will hold tight to help our students, the way you go about accomplishing these things is the loose part, the part where you have the freedom to teach and use your individual skills that work for your individual students.
Remember, we are having these conversations and refocusing our work as collaborative teams because we know that it is what works best for students. There are proven results, over and over, from all over the world, in schools that look like us and schools that don't, that when we all work together our collective efforts are more powerful and meaningful than our individual ones. As I reflect on my leadership, as you know I am constantly doing, this is an area where I need to hold myself accountable in order to help you all grow as teachers. We are doing the right work, please don't mistake anything you've heard in the last couple of weeks as anything different than that, we are just refining our process and being continuous learners.
