Safety Concern at Drop-Off and Dismissal

Student safety is our top priority at Bear Creek Elementary. We need your help to ensure our community follows the safety procedures in place in order to provide for the safe arrival and dismissal of all our students. We have had too many close calls when students are dropped off in places other than the car rider drop-off area located off Whispering Falls and crossing outside of our crosswalks. In addition, parking at our walker intersections creates extra traffic dangers to our students. If a student is being picked up in a car this should be done through the car rider line. If a student is a walker, they may be met by a parent or older sibling and then cross the street at our designated crosswalks before continuing on foot. U-turns in the middle of the street or at intersections are also extremely dangerous during our high-traffic times. Please don't wait until a student is injured before following these directions. We aim to keep all of our students safe and need to work together to ensure their safety! Please see the map below (it is also attached here) for the traffic flow and our designated walker dismissal locations. Thank you for your cooperation!

Student Success Initiative for 5th Grade Students

The Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements apply to enrolled grades 5 and 8 students who take the STAAR reading and mathematics tests at grades 5 and 8. It was enacted by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999 and modified by the 81st Texas Legislature in 2009.

As specified by these requirements, a student may advance to the next grade level only by passing these tests or by unanimous decision of his or her grade placement committee that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction.

The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and mathematics. A parent brochure about SSI requirements for 5th Grade students is located here.

BCE is looking for Destination Imagination Team Managers!

What is Destination Imagination (DI)?

The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

Who is involved?

Parents (team managers), interested students in grades 3 -5 (teams of 5-7), and school sponsor (Mrs. Abbey).

Team managers guide students and hold practice/prep sessions at their homes. Commitment from the team manager, other parents and students is a must!

What are this year’s challenges?

There are 7 challenges to choose from: Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational, and Service Learning/Project Outreach. In addition, all teams compete in an Instant Challenge round.

To see more about each challenge, check out this link: https://www.destinationimagination.org/

What is the time frame?

Team must be formed, named, and registered by October 25th.

Practice sessions continue weekly or biweekly until the tournament on Saturday, March 4th at Seven Lakes High School. This is an all-day event.

Teams selected to go on to state will continue practicing and perform in state tournaments later in the spring.

Where can I learn more about DI?

There will be an informational meeting on Monday, September 26 at 5pm in the school’s library. This will be a time to sign up as a Team Manager.

Thank you!!! Mrs. Katie Abbey
