Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 11

A word from Mr Broom

Another busy week was had by all in school. I met with our new Junior Leadership Team (School Council) on Monday to discuss what we're good at and what we need to improve on. Children agreed that although we usually play very well together, there are some who need reminding about being kind and helpful to each other. Following on with this theme, I've been pulling together a training programme for our mid-day supervisors to support them in their lunchtime role.

On Tuesday, Miss Mackay led THRIVE training for all our staff. This is about the development of our understanding and awareness of wellbeing and mental health in young people and staff. She also held the Ski Trip meetings. It's really exciting to be able to offer such a trip and while it might not be for everyone, I'm delighted that we can offer it.

Our biggest achievement this week came from the huge success in the inter-schools cross country running event. Several of our competing children had a podium finish and their outstanding behaviour and attitudes to sport were commented on by other school leaders from the local schools. A very proud moment for us all.

Have a lovely weekend and if you're out Christmas shopping, wrap up warm. Don't tell anyone, but I'm putting the tree up!

Our Special Achievers

Grapes - If you bring 'em, slice 'em

We've noticed that many of our packed lunches contain whole grapes as part of the meal. If you would like to include grapes in your child's pack up, please ensure that all grapes are sliced. This significantly reduces the chance of choking. Thank you.

Parent Helpers Required

Our teachers would really like to know if any of our parents / carers / grandparents would like to support us by spending some time in school reading with children. If you can give an afternoon, please let your class teacher know. They will be very grateful!

Ski Trip Information

If you were unable to make the Ski Trip Information events held by Miss Mackay this week, the presentation is available below. As always, should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Nut Allergies

If your child brings either a snack or a pack up to school, please help us to protect some of our children who have nut allergies by checking that the products you send with them do not contain any nuts. Thank you.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 96.9%!

Our average attendance this week is 94.2% which is below the national average and the lowest we have seen in some time.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Mobiles on Site

Our teachers have planned exciting lessons for all our children and when they leave school, we're confident that they will want to share their day with you. Conversation is really important to your child's development and for this reason, we're asking that you refrain from using your phone on the school site at drop off and pick up times.
