SCCS Home Bulletin

FROM DR. B.
Happy Wednesday, Trailblazers!
This is it – the last entry in the series the ABCs of SCCS! We’re down to Z = Z last one (I hope you’ll give me a little flexibility – not many words start with Z!).
As we start to wind down the school year, our focus remains on our core: treasuring and training God’s kids so that they may be transformed. A school is for the students, and we do our best to focus on providing engaging instruction, a warm learning environment, and opportunities for growth from TK-8 – all through our Reformed biblical perspective.
God has blessed SCCS for 117 years, and it’s our desire to continue to faithfully implement the mission He has given to this school. SCCS is His school, and we all work together to be faithful stewards of the Christian education that happens in this place.
It has been a privilege and honor to partner with you during the 21-22 school year. We look forward to a summer of refreshing and reflecting and will be ready to go August 23 to kick off the 22-23 school year!
Have a fantastic summer ahead!
With you,
jb

POPS CONCERTS
STORYLINE CELEBRATION INFORMATION
- The dress rehearsal for the TK-8th Grade Storyline Celebration is planned right away in the morning on Monday, May 23, at the BJ Haan Auditorium on Dordt’s campus. The buses will be dropping off the students at the auditorium rather than at SCCS that morning. If you drive your son/daughter to school, please drop them off at the BJ Haan Auditorium between 7:55 and 8:10. rather than at school that morning. Students may not ride their bikes, so if your student normally bikes to school, they will need to walk or get a ride to Dordt’s campus. All students will be bused back to school after the rehearsal.
- 4Care students need to be dropped off at school on Monday morning (May 23). NO buses will be dropping off students at SCCS that morning so you will need to arrange for drop off for your 4Care child. We will start our day like normal in 4Care at 7:55. Thanks!
- Storyline Celebration will be held at the BJ Haan Auditorium at Dordt University on Monday, May 23 at 7:00pm. We would like the students to wear their storyline T-shirts with a nice pair of blue jeans or jean shorts. Please have your children at the BJ Haan Auditorium by 6:50 p.m. We will be dismissing by grade level after the program, so please plan to meet your child on the front lawn of the auditorium after the program. We look forward to sharing how we’ve been learning about and worshiping God this year!
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
- Our last day of school will be Wednesday, May 25.
- Join us for chapel celebrating our 8th graders in the gym at 8:30am.
- We will dismiss at 11:05. The public school has a full day of school on that day so the public school buses will run in the morning but WILL NOT run at 11:05. Only the SCCS buses (2014 and 2020) will be running their routes at 11:05. All other students will need transportation home from school.
8TH GRADE GRADUATION

SCHOOL LUNCH UPDATE
There has been a great thing going for about 2 years, but we have been informed that the government will no longer be providing free meals for all students, starting with the 22-23 school year. Our lunch program is currently determining lunch prices for next year and taking into account the rising cost of food. It would be a good idea to start putting money into your school lunch account for next year so that we all can be ready to go at the beginning of the school year. Kelli Van Roekel (kvanroekel@siouxcenterchristian.com) can help with this process. Also, please note that the federal poverty guidelines have been released, and we anticipate more families will qualify for free or reduced meals next year (the income levels have increased as far as qualification standards). We will share more about completing a free and reduced meals application as part of the registration process in August. If you have any questions, please contact Eileen Buiter (ebuiter@siouxcenterchristian.com).
K-8 CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT
CONGRATULATIONS, MRS. MOUW!
Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Mouw, our Director of Learning, on her graduation from Leadership Sioux Center! Leadership Sioux Center is an educational program spaced over eight months, in which participants build a leadership network among current and emerging leaders, learn about community issues, and become familiar with the rewards of serving one's community. Participants also learned and practiced leadership skills for use in their professional and community service roles. Leadership Sioux Center uses the community as its classroom as sessions are held at various locations in the community. Congratulations to all the graduates! We are so thankful for all our community leaders, who make Sioux Center an awesome place to live, work, and serve!
INQUIRY FAIR
On April 11, our 8th graders hosted the 2nd annual "Inquiry Fair", where they presented research projects, answering the question, "How can we obediently serve God and others through building a brighter community?" Students chose their own topics by focusing on areas of need they see in the community they love.
Area business leaders served as judges and today (May 11), the eleven winners of the Inquiry Fair presented their research to the adults participating in Leadership Sioux Center. They answered questions and received feedback about their topics. "The students did an amazing job sharing their passion, their research, and their ideas!" said writing teacher, Mrs. Den Boer.
After sharing their ideas with Leadership Sioux Center, they went to the public library where four of the students presented ideas that directly connect to things the library could implement in our community. At both Leadership Sioux Center and the Public Library, they received very positive feedback and helpful ideas for how to move forward to actually accomplish their ideas.
As a reward for their hard work, the students received a tour of Casey's Bakery and enjoyed lunch at Pizza Ranch!
POSTER CONTEST
Congratulations to our students who entered and won awards in the Sioux County Soil and Water Conservation District Poster Contest! The 2022 contest theme was “Healthy Soil: Healthy Life".
Overall winners are chosen for each division and three of our students won overall awards, plus 1st and 2nd place winners are chosen from each grade at each participating school. All winners receive a ribbon and a cash prize!
Thanks to Sioux County Soil and Water Conservation District for hosting this contest and giving students the opportunity to use their creative skills to create posters and learn more about our natural resources!
7/8 GRADE MATH BEE
Dordt University offered a virtual math bee for students in 7th and 8th grades on May 16. This math bee was modeled after a nationwide math competition. Its goals encourage students to use multiple strategies to solve problems, to foster mathematical creativity, and to develop persistence in problem solving. Team members were involved in two rounds of testing: an individual problem solving round and a team problem solving round. Three 8th grade students scored in the top 20 individual scorers and the 8th grade math team also took 3rd place among the 8th grade teams participating in this competition. Congratulations to these 7th and 8th grade math students! They did a great job of representing SCCS in this virtual Math Bee!
