What Is It?

  • It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus
  • HIV destroys a type of defense cells in the body called CD4 helper lymphocyte
  • This causes you to become immune deficient, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

How Is It Transmitted?

  • unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sexual intercourse
  • sharing needles- such as t hose used to inject drugs


  • extreme weakness/ fatigue
  • rapid weight loss
  • frequent fevers that last for several weeks with no explanation
  • heavy sweating at night
  • swollen lymph glands
  • minor infections that cause skin rashes and mouth, genital and anal sores
  • white spots in mouth and/or throat
  • chronic diarrhea
  • a cough that won't go away
  • trouble remembering things


  • body loses ability to fight many infections
  • permits some cancers that are stimulated by viral illness
  • after T cells drop opportunistic infections take over


  • abstaining from sex
  • always using latex condoms for all types of sexual intercourse
  • avoiding contact with bodily fluids through which the HIV is transmitted
  • never share needles


  • doctor may do a blood test or swab inside your cheek
  • no cure- antiviral drugs and drugs that boost the immune system may resist infections, help someone stay healthy and prolong their lives
