Strides they are making in sustainability/recycling
This footwear giant does more for the environment than encourage people to walk; its headquarters in the Netherlands use recycled aluminum frames and underground energy storage. It also enforces strict emission standards at all of its factories, and has been able to reduce its overall carbon footprint by approximately 80% since the late 90s.
Since 2003, NIKE Brand apparel has incorporated recycled polyester in its designs: since 2010 the equivalent of more than 2 billion plastic bottles has been used. That’s enough to cover 3,500 soccer pitches entirely. Or, laid end to end, circle the earth ten times. Of all the products designed to use polyester, 19% use recycled content. In FY13, 43% more garments used recycled polyester than in FY12. NIKE designers have the tools to incorporate environmentally better materials into their designs by using the NIKE Materials Sustainability Index to weigh four criteria – waste, water, energy, chemistry – in our Apparel Sustainability Index. You can find recycled polyester in a variety of products: women’s legend pant, panels in the tempo short, even national team soccer kits (which are made from an average 18 recycled plastic bottles each).
graphics and explanations
2.) The technology in the shoe uses knit construction that allows for a lightweight upper that reduces footwear waste.
3.) Overall, in nike corporate headquarters facilities, energy use per square foot decreased by 16% from FY11 through FY13, largely due to system and control upgrades.
4.) At NIKE, we have been working for years to reduce the quantity and types of hazardous* chemicals used by our material vendors and contract manufacturers.
5.) In 2008, NIKE launched an Energy and Carbon Program with contract footwear manufacturers to help reduce carbon emissions. the primary strategy is to reduce energy required at the factory – and use renewable alternatives for the rest.
