Horace Mann Happenings

Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
We had a great first week of school.
- We launched our newly designed Bearcat Club after-school program with more engaging activities.
- 3rd-6th grade completed their swimming unit for gym class. The children learned water safety, CPR basics, and swimming skills.
- Popcorn Friday started today and will continue every Friday. The children are welcome to bring a quarter to school if they would like to buy a bag. All proceeds go to the Parent Advisory Committee who work to contribute to our classrooms.
- Music and Art are off to a great start with new features. Our new music teacher, Mrs. Horton is engaging the children with her skills on the guitar and offering movement activities to enhance the learning of music skills. Mrs. Atkins has started some new art centers and is encouraging the children to publish their art on Artsonia.
- Sign ups for Bearcat Choir and Art Club are available below for grades 3-6.
Coming up
- The library is getting a makeover. Please excuse our mess as we implement our improvements.
- Band class will start next week for 5th/6th grade.
- Updates are in progress to improve our website to help parents locate information.
- September 14th will be our first Bearcat Stadium clean up after the 1:30 pm game. We need lots of families to help with this. When many hands show up, the job only takes about 20 minutes to complete. This easy fundraiser is a great way to support our efforts to offset the costs of initiatives in our school.
Drop Off & Dismissals
- Please remember that children can only go home with people listed on the pick-up list or by a parent note. Please contact LaTessa if you need to update your pickup list. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping your child safe.
- Morning dropoff is monitored by a staff member from 7:30-7:50. Families also have the option of parking in the parking lot and walking their child inside.
- School starts at 7:50 am. Please help us reduce the number of late arrivals to limit the number of classroom disruptions and loss of instructional time.

Crayola’s ColorCycle
When markers run dry, they don't have to be sent to the landfill. Send them to Horace Mann to be recycled. Crayola's new ColorCycle program offers schools a way to recycle spent markers, so they get a second life as a clean-burning fuel. According to Crayola, "one box of markers creates enough energy to cook an egg, make toast and brew one pot of coffee."
Through the ColorCycle program, schools collect markers and then box them up for shipment to the ColorCycle recycling facility. They're melted down at the recycling facility and turned into a fuel that Crayola says "can be used to heat a home, run a car, or cook food."
Crayola ColorCycle will accept all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers. That includes dry erase markers and highlighters! ColorCycle will eliminate placing hundreds of tons of markers into landfills.
