FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE

All feelings are okay. In today's society in which many people believe we have to be happy at all times and should not ever experience anxiety, anger, or sadness, this phrase is not often believed. When our kids are disciplined at home or at school, the punishment/intervention often comes after a choice was made in anger/sadness/frustration/anxiety. When our Eagles are having a difficult moment and make a poor choice, they sometimes will say that they "got in trouble because they were mad." We know this is not true as the adults in their lives who care about them, but this is also the moment for us to be very clear in telling them that the choice is what led to the consequence. If we don't make that clear, kids believe some feelings are wrong. Feelings aren't wrong, but choices can be. We don't ever want to get stuck in anxiety, anger, or sadness and experience them long-term - that is when we need to seek help. However, if I make a poor choice and feel guilt, that's okay. If I struck out to end the ninth inning rally, it's all right to feel disappointment. These are also examples of time where we as adults model resilient thinking with our children to help them manage these feelings, experience them, and come through them stronger than before. Interactions like these build relationships and are at the core of restorative discipline and paramount to establishing communities that collaborate to keep moving forward.

A few notes that don't really relate to one another as I close out this week:

Tonight at 6:00 is our annual Trick or Reading event. Dress your Eagle in their costume and feel free to put one on yourself too for a fun night celebrating reading. Our fall book fair will also be open tonight for you if you are interested. I would like to thank Becky Jordahl, all of our teacher volunteers, and the fifth grade for their hard work and support of this awesome event!

This week, your Eagle should have brought home a letter about our Veterans Day recognition this year. We are asking that you submit photos of veterans in your family or circle of friends along with their name, military branch, and years of service to ncveteransday@gmail.com. These will be added to a slideshow that will be played during the assembly occurring November 11 at 2:00 in our community room. Veterans and their families are invited to attend, and it would be our honor to recognize them for their sacrifices and contributions to our country.

A quick note about our main parking lot. In the interest of safety for all members of our Norton Creek community, the fire lane is only to be used by our buses between 8:20 and 8:40. If you are dropping off your Eagle in the main parking lot, please, park in one of the lined spaces and walk him or her to the front door using the main crosswalk. At all times (before and after school), if you are walking to the front door with your child or to pick him or her up, please, only use the main crosswalk. It may be quicker to walk in between buses; however, it is unsafe because drivers may not be able to see you. Furthermore, when you are dropping off and picking up your Eagles, please, only use accessible parking for people with disabilities if someone in your vehicle has a disability and will be coming to the building. We have a very diverse population with community members with a host of needs, and it is imperative that they have primary access to these parking spots. Thank you for your cooperation.

I don't believe this weekend will have quite the weather we had last weekend; however, I still wish you a restful, fun weekend, Norton Creek!
