Mrs. Wilson's Language Class
November 16-20
6th Grade Point of View
Tuesday students were given library time to choose a book that is in their reading level. This will be the book that we will use for our literature circles. We will be focusing on reading strategies for this literature circle. Students filled out a schedule for their reading books. They need to be finished with the book in three weeks. Check with your child to see what they plan on reading over the next few weeks.
Wednesday I put the students into groups according to the topic of their book. They then had to talk about their book to their group and as a group they had to figure out what they all had in common. From there some students chose to switch groups based on what the other groups came up with. When I made the groups, I was only working with a small description that the students gave me.
Thursday students set up their group's discussion director role. The Discussion Director needs to come up with a discussion question for their group to answer on their respective books. Each student will be a discussion director more than once. When they are the Discussion Director for their group, they have a day to prepare a questions. I have sample questions that they can use or modify as they see fit for their group.
Friday students continued on with their reading. Our first round of discussion questions went well. I was impressed with some of the questions that the students came up with.

Tuesday-Thursday students went back to the library to work on editing their narrative paper. They will be doing this for the week. I gave each student personal feedback on their story. This feedback was geared toward what I was looking for with the grading rubric in mind. This personal feedback gave me the opportunity to push students where they needed it the most. Hopefully they take my feedback and run with it. I hope to have these graded and into Skyward next week.
Friday there were a few students who needed to finish up polishing their narrative piece. The rest of the class started to pick out books for the next reading unit. Students were asked to pick out a book of interest to them. This book could be on any topic. They then set up a reading schedule for themselves for the next three weeks. On the fourth week, students will be working on a project to display the reading strategies that they have learned throughout this unit. I will get you more details to this project in the coming weeks.
