Principal's Message

Dear Chehalem Families,

We are really excited this week as our K-1 teachers and support staff have been given the opportunity to schedule and receive their first dose of the Covid vaccine at the Convention Center. As I mentioned in another school messenger email yesterday, teacher's schedules may need to change on the day they are able to get their vaccine appointments. It is taking approximately 1.5 hours to get through the line and receive the vaccine. Add in travel time and it could take up to 3 hours to complete the process. Please be understanding if your child's teacher needs to change up their schedule on the day they will be receiving the vaccine, as appointments are somewhat hard to come by and I am encouraging teachers to take any appointment possible.

Appointments for teachers in 2nd-5th grade should be opening up next week, followed by middle school and then high school teachers.

You should have also received an email from the district stating that the date for considering a return to school in a hybrid model (starting with K-2nd grade) was moved back to April 5th at the earliest. This date is in alignment with the hope that teachers would have received both vaccines and had time to develop immunity.

Next week a survey will be sent out asking you to commit to a specific method of instruction for your child through the end of the school year (remaining in distance learning or returning in hybrid). You will have until February 15th to make your decision. Here is a video to explain the different options. English Version. Spanish Version.

Below is a photo of one model classroom with 25 desks that are easily spread out in the room, with both an A and B cohort having their own desks (cohort A in seats 1 and 3 and B in 2 and 4, for example). Every classroom is different in what furniture it currently has and what changes are needed to make it in compliance with the Ready Schools Safe Learners Guidelines. The newest changes made this week are designated in green.

Reminder that there is no school on Friday, February 5th due to a grading day for teachers. Report cards/Progress Reports will be accessible the following Friday through ParentVue. Wednesday, February 3rd will still be asynchronous since teachers are working that Friday. The week of President's day (February 15th) will have no school on Monday for the holiday, but a typical synchronous day that Wednesday, February 17th with Monday specials happening.

Please sign up for an appointment for school pictures on Wednesday, February 3rd from 3-6:30 if interested . Detailed information later in the newsletter. We only have about 75 people signed up so far, so plenty of room for more.

Stay healthy and well!

Sincerely, Angee Silliman
