Greek architecture is known for its columns. There are three types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Other types of Greek art include pottery, sculptures, and paintings. Every city-state had a temple that was dedicated to a specific god. They went there to worship and make sacrifices. Some leaders like Pericles and Alexander The Great spread the Greek architecture throughout Europe.

We see Greek influence in architecture today in important buildings. The White House, Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and the Lincoln memorial all have columns that show Greek influence.

The Greek Government had a Direct Democracy where Everyone could voice their opinion & vote on laws. A council was chosen by lottery(pull names out of a hat) and were limited to 1 yr. Leaders were chosen from a hat(lottery). They did have slaves. the major wars that they fought were the Pele Ponnesian, and the Persian War.

Some ways that the Greek Government affects us today is that you still have to be 18 to vote, we have a democracy, we still have term limits(the president holds office for 4yrs. He is limited to two terms).

To Play sports in Ancient Greece, you had to be a free, unmarried, man(and men only). They played Javelin, Discus, Pentathlon, Wrestling, Running, Chariot Racing, and Boxing. Men, Gods, unmarried women, and Government Officials were able to watch sports. The reason they played sports was to honor the gods. The athletes were heroes; they had statues made of them, and they also got free meals for a year.

We still have Greek sports affect us today because we have the Olympics every year(boxing, wrestling, discus, etc...).

The characters in Greek Mythology stories explained natural occurrences(Zeus-lighting, Demeter Persephone- Seasons). Some of the famous Greek Mythology characters were Odyeseus, Hercules, Perseus, and Achilles. Homer, Aesop is one of the important people who wrote mythology. When people died, they believed that they to the underworld where they would be judged.

Today, we still study Mythology; some movies are based off of Greek mythology like Hercules and Percy Jackson movies.

Some philosophers are Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Eucid, Pythagoras, Hippocrates, Archimedes, and Herodotus. Archimedes invented PI & other war machines. Pythagoras invented Pythagoras Theremen. Ideas in medicine were made by Hippocrates. Eucid did some discoveries in Geometry. Plato was the Republic. Some important questions that they asked where, "What is the world made of?" What is life? What is beauty? What is the right thing to do? What is the ultimate substance of all reality? The way the philosophers were regarded and treated were different, for example, Socrates was treated very poorly, while Plato was highly respected.

Greek Philosophy affects us today because we still see doctors using Hippocrates Oath. We still use some of those math skills today like PI, Pythagoras Theory and still study geometry.
