Dear Longhorn Families,
We are so excited to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year! On Tuesday, September 8, we welcome our Longhorns back for live virtual instruction promptly at 8:45am. We have put together a little information to highlight recent updates and explain the logistics for Virtual Learning for the fall.
Just over a week ago, the district's Final Reopening Framework was released and since that time, Longhorn staff has been working to make the necessary updates and training to ensure we are well-prepared for a safe and successful school year. We know that this year will be different but we know as a Lovett community we are better together and stronger than ever because Lovett Longhorns can do VIRTUALLY anything. We have taken the lessons from last year to make the proper adjustments to ensure our families are supported and are students are engaged. A few key updates are listed below:
All students will participate in remote learning using the Google Suite, including Google Classroom and Google Meet. This will allow CPS to better track student attendance and greater consistency across all schools. You can find a great Google Classroom tutorial for parents here and on this Thursday, September 3rd. Principal Cain and Assistant Principal Melendez will be holding a google how-to for parents to help them get prepared.
There will be a significant increase in real-time live (synchronous) minutes based on the feedback from parents. Kindergarten will receive 180 minutes of real-time (synchronous) instruction and 180 minutes of independent learning activities (asynchronous). Longhorn students in grades 3-4 will receive 205 synchronous minutes and 155 asynchronous minutes. Middle school students will receive 230 synchronous minutes and 130 asynchronous minutes. All students will participate in all specials classes (Spanish, Fine Arts, PE) each week and all specials classes will have a 30-minute live component in every class session.
Grading and attendance will return standard practices meaning students are accountable for active engagement and participation in all classes and assignments. Please note that CPS' Framework guidance asks that attendance be taken throughout the day and requires students to demonstrate engagement throughout all sections via google classroom AND google meets daily.
Although the mode of delivery for instruction will be different, instruction will continue to be delivered with the same dedication and care that our Longhorn Staff is known for. If you are need technology, please do not hesitate to reach out to josephlovettelem@gmail.com with your child's name and we will schedule a time for pick up by the parent/guardian on file. I always say that one of the greatest characteristics of the Lovett learning community is the genuine care and compassion shared between staff, students, and parents. We are all partners in this work and we will continue to build on her legacy of love to ensure that our IMPACT on the lives of our students is the reason everyone will continue to “Love it” at Lovett! I look forward to an amazing year! As always, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you and I thank you for all you do!

How is virtual learning different this year than last year?
Daily virtual instruction will take place via BOTH Google Classroom AND Google Meets for every student from 8:45 am - 3:45 pm every school day. Attendance is mandatory during school hours and will be taken throughout the day for each course. Grades will return to normal and all students will be graded on their mastery of grade-level content per the usual CPS policy.
How do I get technology for my child?
We have been working hard to ensure that all students have access to a digital device and support with internet access. If you are in need of technology, please send an email with your child's name to josephlovettelem@gmail.com requesting a device and we will reply with a scheduled time for pick up by the parent/guardian on file.
What are the attendance expectations for virtual learning?
According to the new CPS policy, attendance is taken throughout the school day (8:15 am - 3:15 pm). Students will be marked present, absent, or tardy. Students’ days will be a mix of live sessions where they engage in authentic live instruction with their teacher and peers and independent work. The day also includes stretch breaks and a break for lunch. In order to be marked present, students must be logged into Google Meets during the duration of live lessons. Your child's schedule will also be posted on their teacher's page on lovettelementary.org to ensure parents and students are aware of the times scheduled for live instruction.
How will grading work during virtual learning?
According to the new CPS policy, students will be graded under the normal CPS grading policy. Students will submit assignments to be graded in Google Classroom and students in grades 1 - 8 will earn letter grades. All grades will be visible in the Parent Portal in Aspen.
