Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 2 - Issue 2

A word from Mr Broom.

Our second week of the half term has been most eventful. Throughout school, the children have shared some wonderful learning experiences.

I visited Year 1 and 2 on Thursday afternoon to find them sharing a range of activities around their project of 'the power of the poppy'. The children's engagement was amazing to see as they completed a carousel of activities including, class poppy making, poppy paint printing and many more. Similarly in Year 3 and 4, the children were working together to make a shaduf. This was the earliest form of lever system used by the Egyptians. To see the children working out the challenge using string, wood and other resources was brilliant.

Congratulations are also in order to our Year 3/4 hockey team, who came second in the inter-schools hockey championships at Sherburn High School. They had a wonderful time and were unlucky not to be the overall champions.

Meanwhile, our teachers and support staff have been working with Miss Mackay on Kagan learning. This is a methodology of teaching that allows maximum participation in lessons. The teachers have already started to practice and adopt the approaches shared and we'll be developing this throughout the term, aiming to raise standards all the while.

Star Children in School this Week

Big image

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 1 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 98.2%.

As you can see below, out attendance in some classes is way above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

The overall attendance this week fell to 95.7% and is the first time we've been below the national average this year. Let's hope to bounce back next week!

Chair of Governors Visit

Last Friday, Mrs Claire Sutton (our chair of governors) visited school to take part in some learning walks and work scrutiny. She wanted me to pass on her thanks to the children and staff for welcoming her on the day. Claire commented, 'I was met by happy children who were keen and very eager to share their work and who were super proud of their learning. I could see the progress very clearly in the children's work and I look forward to my next visit.'

Parking Concerns

While we realise that drop-off and pick-up times are busy period of the day, it's important that we abide by the highway code. I am aware that local residents and neighbours are reporting parking which occurs on the yellow zig-zag lines and inappropriate parking on footpaths, corners and the blocking of drives. Please use the Co-op carpark wherever possible or please ensure that you park with consideration of others. Thank you.

ParentView Survey

You may or may not be aware that the government use a website called ParentView to gather the opinions of parents/carers when inspecting schools. Please help us by completing the online survey. It takes about five minutes to do and will help us to further improve as well as celebrate the things we are doing well.

Please click here to access the ParentView survey.

A thank you from Selby & District Foodbank

You may recall that our harvest produce collection this year was taken to the Selby & District Foodback by our friends at Sherburn Methodist Church. We receive a lovely letter thanking the school community for their generous donation. I just thought you would like to know.

Glasses a must for those needing them

If your child needs glasses to read or access learning, it's important that you ensure that they bring them to school and wear them. Without being able to see properly, their learning can be limited. Thank you.

17th November (Friday) - Y1 Parents - Children in Need Lunch - 11:55am

Christmas Cards for Schools

If you wanted to purchase from the Christmas Cards for Schools project, please ensure your order forms are returned to school by Thursday 16th November. Please pay by ParentPay. The link's at the bottom of this newsletter.

Operation Christmas Child

I recognise it's late notice but I was approached by a parent to ask if we could run the 'Operation Christmas Child' event, which is where the children fill a shoe box full of goodies for a child in another part of the world, less fortunate than themselves. I think it's a really good cause but the turn-around is a quick one. We need all shoe boxes back to school by next Friday 17th November, should your child want to take part. I've sent out a leaflet explaining how you can get involved.
