From the Principal's Desk...

Dear Highview Families,

Happy Fall! I hope you and your loved ones are healthy and well during the start of this beautiful season. We had another busy, productive week here at Highview School. Our academic priorities and routines are in full-swing, and students are engaging in relevant experiences that help to move them forward as learners. During the week of October 3, we will administer our aimswebPLUS benchmark assessment for both ELA and Math. This assessment will help to pinpoint specific areas of strength as well as next steps for future learning. If you have any questions about this assessment, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.

This week, our School Counselor, Ms. Melissa Lipson, facilitated our kick-off assembly for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). She focused on reviewing Kelso's Choices for Conflict Management. As a school community, we commit to empowering our students to be able to solve small conflicts and/or problems with minimal to no adult assistance. Of course, the teachers and staff are always willing to assist a child in need when solving conflicts or problems.

I would like to thank our classroom teachers for their hard work in building learning communities in which all students feel loved, safe, and valued. Students check-in on the Mood Meter regularly to describe and reflect upon their emotions. Additionally, teachers and students are working together to put the final touches on their Classroom Charters. These important tools not only involve students in community-building, but also encourage them to talk about their feelings on a regular basis.

Our support staff is well underway with planning for related services for students. They have been working alongside classroom teachers to create cycles and rotations for providing students with enrichment and/or additional support in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our support staff is a diverse group of professionals who have deep knowledge in a variety of related services, which include counseling, ENL, remedial math, remedial reading, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech. They add tremendous value to our school community!

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Marc Brackett, Founder of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to Highview Elementary School on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. He will be walking through our classrooms to see the amazing work our teachers are doing to promote the social-emotional and physical well-being of all students. In the evening, he will facilitate a workshop for parents/guardians only, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Highview Auditorium. This parent workshop will focus on social-emotional wellbeing and is open to parents/guardians of students in Grades K-4 here in the Nanuet Union Free School District. Please see the flyer below for more details. We are so excited for this special event!

As we move into this upcoming long weekend, I want you to know how incredibly proud I am of our Highview School community. I cannot thank YOU, our families, enough for your unwavering dedication and support. We could not do this important work without you! I hope you have a restful long weekend and wish you nothing but happiness and joy if you are celebrating one of the upcoming holidays. We look forward to seeing our Highview Knights back in school on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Enjoy the beautiful long weekend!

Our goal is to ensure students are engaged in learning while making positive contributions to our school community.

Digital Backpack

Each week, documents will be loaded to our Digital Backpack, which is linked to the bottom of the Highview homepage. We encourage you to check the Digital Backpack, which is updated every Friday, to ensure you have updated information on important dates, events, and opportunities being offered to students and families.

Meet the Teacher Night - Principal's Presentation (Final Posting)

You can access the Principal's Presentation from Meet the Teacher Night by clicking here.

New Student Group

Ms. Lipson, our School Counselor, has worked to create a "New Student Group" for those Highview students who are new to the Nanuet Union Free School District. The purpose of this group is to help students adjust to being in a new school. Additionally, this group provides students with the opportunity to socialize with one another (and the counselor) without the parameters and structures of a formal counseling group.

RULER Mentor School (2nd Posting)

After a rigorous application process, Highview Elementary School was one of six schools internationally to be selected as a RULER Mentor School. Highview Elementary School has demonstrated exemplary practices in training and facilitating the RULER approach to social-emotional learning and is now recognized as a leader in the RULER community. Highview Elementary School has integrated SEL into our school culture with a focus on instilling these values into the core of our teaching and learning practices, resulting in a positive shift in school climate and better quality student and staff relationships. We look forward to continuing to learn and grow in this new mentor role.

Please save the date! On October 19, 2022, Dr. Marc Brackett, Founder and Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, will visit Highview School. He will host an assembly for students during the school day and a workshop for parents/guardians in the evening. You can view the "Ruler Mentor School Letter for Families" below to learn more. Specific details are forthcoming. We certainly hope you join us!

Safety and Security Protocols

As you know, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority in the Nanuet Union Free School District. In an effort to ensure our building is safe and secure, we have made some revisions to our visitor policies and procedures at Highview School. The protocols are outlined in the document below.
