Stilwell Monday Message

Weekly Student and Family Communication

Monday - 10/19/2020

Good Morning Stilwell students and families,

We want to thank all of you for participating in conferences with us last week via phone or virtually on the computer. It was great getting to connect with each of you about your student. In order for us to continue to improve our conference format please take a moment and provide us some feedback. CLICK HERE

Students have done an amazing job wearing their masks which continues to keep all staff and students safe and healthy while at school. We have started to notice a few situations where students are not wearing the mask appropriately. Please remind your student that the mask needs to be covering both their face and their nose at all times. We appreciate your support in continuing to have Stilwell be a safe environment for all.

Just a reminder we will not have school on Friday, October 30th, and Friday, November 13th. These days were recently changed to support staff with additional learning, planning, and work time

The Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA)

The Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) will be starting up again this year! We will be meeting virtually every other Thursday from 3:15 to 4:00 pm. Our first few meetings will be about finding new leadership this year since we didn't get to do that at the end of last year. Make sure to join us if you are interested in being part of the leadership or learn about our focus for the year. Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 22nd and you can join by using this Google Meet Link. Please reach out to Ms. Belden with any questions you may have.

Highlighting Learning

Mr. Wong is beginning his 17th year teaching art at Stilwell. As an artist, he loves to draw! Consequently, one of his favorite art projects in his 8th-grade program is to do a portrait drawing of "Someone I Admire." Students reviewed last year's drawings from a unit that focuses on trying to copy or match a picture accurately. They practiced with some preliminary drawings, including shading to match a photograph. This year students were instructed to bring in a photo of someone they look up to and respect. from there, students were to create a pencil drawing to replicate the photo. The students spent many hours working on this large (16x20") drawing project.

For his students online, Mr. Wong supported them in researching perhaps Iowa's most famous artists, Grant Wood. They viewed his renowned and iconic painting, American Gothic. From there, students created their own "version" of the farm couple with the house structure in the background.

Here are some of the student creations.

Parking Lot Protocol

We understand our parking lot drop-off and pick-up process can be time-consuming. However, we need all families to follow the procedures to ensure our students are safe. Please remember these guidelines:

  • Do not drop off your student or stop for any reason along Vine Street.
  • Do not pull into the bus lanes along Vine Street.
  • Do not allow your student to exit the vehicle until you have pulled up to the curb in the parking lot.
  • Please drive slowly through the parking lot and on Vine St.

Building Opening and Closing Hours

Each morning the building will open to students at 7:20 am. Students riding their bikes, walk or receiving rides should be using the west entrance that faces Grand Avenue. Students riding the bus will use the south entrance that faces Vine Street. We ask that students continue to social distance during this time.

Each afternoon the building will close to students 10 minutes after the last bell. This would be 2:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and would be 2:00 on Wednesdays. We are asking that all students have left the Stilwell campus 20 minutes after the last bell.

After The Bell

After the bell is an additional opportunity at the end of the day to get support with learning from a certified teacher. It will start on Tuesday, September 8th in the Stilwell cafeteria. Students will receive an additional snack using social distancing and are welcome to stay until 4:00 pm. After the bell will run each week Monday-Thursday. For more information please contact Mr. Peter Bissinger at bissingerp@wdmcs.org.
