Wiley News

  • THANK YOU! Our Wiley staff felt the L-O-V-E last week! Thank you, Wiley school family, for your kindness and generosity during Staff Appreciation Week. Grandest of gratitude to Mary Ellen Healy and her PTA team for organizing and sending us home with full hearts and full bellies!

  • Updated WCPSS Mask Guidance - Please note the following (repeat from WCPSS email): We are formally updating our guidance about face coverings based on the newest guidance issued by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) in the StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit. The guidance makes the use of masks optional while outdoors, but still requires masks for children ages 5 and older while indoors and on school transportation.

For that reason, face coverings are no longer required outdoors for recess, classes held outdoors, outdoor PE class, outdoor eating, and similar small gatherings. Face coverings will still be required indoors and on school transportation.

Please note that the option belongs to the student or staff member on whether to wear a mask outdoors. A school does not have the option to mandate a mask requirement outdoors.

  • National Magnet Schools Award - Dance Party Celebration - TAKE TWO - Friday, May 14th at 3:00 - Families are welcome to join us to celebrate from the sidewalk (can't party on campus with us yet!). Whip up a sign, dust off the dancing shoes and bring your good cheer! VA students can join us on campus or via our Virtual Dance Party using code: WileyPE. Limited parking is available at the funeral home across St. Mary's Street and on the city streets - walk if you can do so! Student check-out will be available directly (if desired) from the party using "exit tickets" that will be provided. *Tentative plan - PreK-2 students in the soccer field area at the "new entrance" and 3-5 on the field at the back corner of campus by the basketball goal.

News from our Cecilia Rawlins Fund

Change is never easy. But, as we all know, it truly is the only constant in life.

For many of us, the end of the school year signals change in routines and activities. In addition to regular end of school year transitions, I am preparing for two changes in the coming weeks: After eleven years I’m transitioning away from being a parent at our beloved Wiley, a school that has nurtured and inspired my two sons. At the same time, I’m rotating off the Board of Wiley’s Cecilia Rawlins Fund – a non-profit I helped to create and birth with a group of Wiley parents back in 2014. I am the last of the original parents at Wiley. And, as I make this change, I ask that you help to continue the vital work of the Cecilia Rawlins Fund.

The Cecilia Rawlins Fund is the only organization of its kind in WCPSS. Named for Wiley’s long-time principal (10 years) who was known for her kindness and compassion, Cecilia used to purchase food and clothing for students from her own pocket. She knew that if the basic needs of students weren’t met, that learning was nearly impossible.

This nimble, all volunteer, donation-based non-profit provides weekend food through Backpack Buddies, helps families transitioning out of homelessness, assists with emergency rent and utility bills and much more all behind the scenes while maintaining dignity for our students. We are a group of dedicated, Wiley parents, former Wiley parents, staff and community members who recognize the special community here at Wiley and truly believe that rising tides lift up all boats.

If you agree, please join me in making an end of year donation to help us raise the needed $9k to send grocery gift cards home for every student who needs one this summer. Go to www.rawlinsfund.org to learn more and donate. Also, please consider joining our board to continue the good work in the Wiley community.

Wiley is a very special place and I’m so honored to have been a part of it for so long. To walk its historic halls and now it’s modern grounds. To me, The Cecilia Rawlins Fund and Wiley are inextricably linked. The former being an off shoot of that same special community. But, like a plant that has flowered and died making space for new growth it’s time for new energy in the soil. New families will arrive at Wiley in the autumn and new voices and energy will join the Rawlins Fund Board.

If the last year has taught us anything, now more than ever community is everything. And the needs of our community have never been greater. Help us continue Cecilia’s mission by actively supporting the Cecilia Rawlins Fund. Go to www.rawlinsfund.org to learn more and donate.

Thank you for ensuring the continuation of this important legacy.

Wednesday, May 26 - Asynchronous Day

Monday, May 31 - HOLIDAY - no school

Thursday, June 10 - Last Day of School, 5th Grade Promotion @ 9:30am at the entrance/soccer fields on College Place (hold Wednesday, too, just in case the forecast doesn't look favorable)
